Those of you who use Biotin to strengthen nails, how many mcg do you take daily? Is any brand better than others? Thanks for your help. Jo

I started taking 10,000 mg a day and after a couple months lowered it to 5,000mg. I took that for almost 2 years and got absolutely no results. I already had thick, fast-growing hair but the nails are still the same mess I started with. I've also taken the Lessman hair and nails vitamins which upset my digestion after a couple months but it, too did nothing.

I think good nails are inherited and other than keeping them from getting too dry by using lotion or oils, there is not much you can do to improve them. I've tried all sorts of hardners and virtually everything else people have mentioned here with no improvement. You canl waste a lot of money in the search. Good luck.

I buy the 1000 mg Biotin at Walmart for $3 a bottle. Since I've been taking a daily tablet my nails don't break like they used to plus keeping them on the short side helps. They also seem to grow a lot faster.

I only take the 300mcg in my B-Complex Vitamin, and my nails are strong. However, I do have strong nails anyway. I may up my dosage to 5mg/5000mcg to see if it makes a difference with my hair. Do beware that Biotin is known for causing acne b/c it detoxifies. I got about 1 pimple per day, but it eventually subsided in about a month.

Also, I buy all of my vitamins from Vitamin Shoppe, and I use their brand. Be careful, not all brands are good. I would stick with GNC or Vitamin Shoppe if I were you.

I've been taking the 5000 for six months and haven't noticed a difference yet. I thought I would try this before the HS&N's because they are sooooo expensive!

Sugarsugar,

I have been taking 1000 mg of Biotin for several years and I never have a problem with my nails. They are nice and hard, not brittle, and rarely break. I keep them long and use Gelish polish every three weeks. I also use Biotin Liquid Shampoo on my hair and believe it or not, by hair loss has diminished. My hair looks also look better. Perhaps between the two Biotins, it is doing the job.

I use the 1000 mcg from WalMart too. Nails grow faster. I put Solar Nail Oil a few times a week at bedtime to keep them flexible.

I also take the Walmart 1000mg per day for over a year and have found my nails are stronger and seem to grow faster. My hair also has benefited from the Biotin. I don't think you need to spend a fortune to get good results. Walmart's website also has good comments from their customers on this product.

Please remember that Biotin is usually measured in mcg, not mg. If you say you are taking 1000, it is not mg, but mcg. 1000 mcg is equal to 1 mg.

Just beware the higher the doses of biotin can really wreck havoc on the skin causing some pretty nasty acne. You'll have nice nails and hair but your skin will be a mess.

Andrew Lessman, over on HSN makes wonderful vitamins. He is the Vitamin King, in my mind. I take lots of his vitamins. Go over there and type in vitamins and you'll be introduced to him.

Listen to esty's words of caution. You can over dose with vitamins. One of my boyfriends, when I was a teenager, had a family member who died from an overdose of vitamins.

I currently have a bottle of Spring Valley 5,000 mcg biotin.

Thanks to this site, my nails are the best they've ever been! I didn't know about biotin until last year. It didn't take long and my nails began to look really good.

Thanks! {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

Biotin definitely did help my nails, but I will tell you that the thing that REALLY got them to stop chipping and peeling was extra Vitamin D! Literally made them healthy again.

From what I have read there really is no known over dose for Biotin and no real side effects, but no more than 10000 mcg daily is recommended. Biotin is supposed to be great for the skin, I have never heard that it can cause acne, but Esty knows her biz, so I believe her.

It's been a long time since I knew much about overdosing about vitamins. I'm sure you ladies would know more about them. I thought I remember that B vitamins are more difficult to take Mega doses and be in danger because B Vitamins are more soluable. You pe e them out. I thought A and E were the more dangerous about taking Mega Doses. I might be wrong, it sure wouldn't be the first or last time.

Less danger of B overdose, because you do excrete the excess.

Yes, A and D are stored, therefore, more danger of toxic overdose.

Tell me about the shampoo. What is the brand, where can I buy it and how long have you been using it? I wasn't aware that there is a Biotin shampoo.

I take 3,000 mcg of Biotin daily and I'd like to think I'm seeing a difference. Actually I believe my eczema is slightly improved.

Looking forward to your answer. Smile

Thanks! I 'm pretty sure Whole Foods sells Avalon and I have one near me. I'll check it out this week.

I've been using Nioxin for a year and can't say that I see a whole lot of results, plus its expensive.

Have to be honest here, neither the Jason Biotin shampoo or the Avalon Biotin shampoo have done anything to help my thinning hair, happy to hear it has helped others.

I take the CVS brand 5000mcg biotin capsules and have to cut my nails back every couple of weeks. I also have found with this particular brands my hair seems to be growing faster. I've tried different brands of biotin but this one makes my nails grow so much faster and they are also much harder.

When I removed my acrylics, I took 5000 mcg of Biotin daily for over a year. I stopped taking it almost a year ago and haven't noticed that my nails miss it.
