O/T Help Please! I can't get a good cup of coffee with " my K-cup"

Started 1323821764.523 in Beauty Banter | Last reply 1324244502.793 by just bee

from Keurig.

Love the k-cups but I need to cut back on them because they can get expensive but the "my k cup" filter makes a horrible cup of coffee no matter what I try.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

:)

Are you pulling the rubber gasket down to the very tip of the piercing needle before closing the top? Also adding espresso with the coffee you use and running the small cup feature first to pre-brew helps then waits a minute and run another brew with the already wet grounds the coffee turns out best that way

Are you dissatisfied with the coffee itself, or the strength when brewing? I recommend Dunkin Donuts coffee. As far as the strength, open up an unused k-cup, and see how much coffee is actually in that. Put the equivalent amount in the my k-cup, and select the water/cup size you normally use. Hope that helps, and gives you good coffee!

I understand the pre-brew suggestion and I haven't tried that. I bought dark roast coffee and did wet it a bit to pack it more but I can try your suggestion. No, I haven't tried espresso.

I don't understand about the gasket. I insert it then pull the handle down, there is another way to do this because it looks like the basket fits fine in there.

I'm actually looking to replace this with my regular coffee maker so it's important I don't always use the k-cups but I'm thinking this may not be sensible. I just got the newest model from the Q the one with the hot water feature.

Thanks.

:)

I'm too lazy to use it, and I also got grinds in my coffee, but the coffee tasted good. Try using your fave brand of coffee. Freshly ground will be tastier. Finer grinds will also make a stronger cup, as will setting the Keurig to a smaller cup size. I like Dunk's coffee, so I used that. I think no matter what, it won't be as good as Dunk's, Starbuck's or whatever your favorite place is to pick it up all prepared, but it's still really good IMO.

Yes, is it the flavor of the coffee or the strength or what? I like flavored and my DH does not. He likes it a bit stronger than I do. We've loved having the Keurig b/c we can both get exactly what we want. I know I sound like a commercial, but for us, it's true. Maybe you need to start sampling a bunch of different brands/flavored k-cups?

Okay, so you get a good cup of coffee with DD coffee. I can purchase that in Costco. First I had the plastic smell and taste and that is gone, but then I used regular k cups and of course they taste good but making coffee with the my k-cup tastes like boiled water.

I use Dunkin Donut Dark. I fill the kcup about 1/4" to 1/8" from the top. I have the mini and use a 10oz cup with filtered water. I put my coffeemate in the cup before brewing the coffee.

Be kind. For everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.

I have sampled them all but it's not the k-cups I'm referring to it's using my own coffee in a "my k-cup" filter.

We couldn't get a good cup of coffee no matter what we did. Back to the store the Keurig went after 2 weeks.

Thank you. Is the DD coffee fine, because I am thinking the finer the coffee grind the better it will be. I think the water passes through the coffee filter too fast and that's the problem.

Silent, something is wrong, it should still taste like coffee, lol. Try the Dunk's. You won't be able to change the grind unless you own a grinder. I just filled the cup and followed directions.

Wasn't that plastic taste that eventually goes away horrid? I stupidly only ran 1 cup of water through when I first tried ours (as per the directions) so I have a feeling I ingested lots of plastic and who knows what else!

That's what I was originally thinking. I have the mini and it works great with k-cups but if I can't get my own coffee to taste good this machine is not worth having.

lol I was so excited to get a fast cup of coffee and then the smell of plastic but of course I had to taste it too. That was about the third cup we ran and it wasn't detected on the first two. Thank goodness that is gone. I'm just so disappointed because I thought this could replace my regular coffee maker. I will try the Dunkin donuts. I have until Jan 31 to return it.

If you have the brewer top open and look up inside you will see the needle that pierces the pre-packaged kcups. If the rubber gasket that is Around the needle isn't pulled down to the very tip of the needle it will allow to much water to flood the kcup causing really watery coffee and possible grounds in the cup as well. I use Starbucks house blend with a little espresso and always end up with perfect coffee. If you use the k-cup that you fill you will need to adjust the rubber gasket between every cup

thanks so much. I am going to go check it out now.

Silent, hope you get a great tasting cup somehow. There's also something called a Solo-fill cup that is reuseable, but I haven't tried it.

Dunk's came out with their own K cups and they cost the most of any cup I've found. Had to try 1 box, and they are really good, but the price is crazy, at least for now.

I think I understand where you're coming from because when I first started using mine I couldn't stand the taste of my coffe either, and almost sent my Keurig back.

It took me playing around with different amounts of coffee and different sizes of cups until I found the exact amount that I loved. I always use Wawa coffee and I never have had any coffee grounds in my coffee. I prefer mine weaker than most I suppose and only use one tablespoon for a 12oz mug of coffee and it's perfect for me. Good luck!

SD, let me know if that works :) That's the tip keurig customer service gave me when I called because I was having the same issue you are having

We are drinking Peet's and Dunkin Donut coffee right now with our new Ekobrew refillable filter cups. It works pretty well with just a little bit of sediment in the bottom. I had nover heard of a mykcup. My machine is a couple years old and we got it at Best Buy.

Okay, so the first time I did the gasket thing and it didn't help. The second time I decided to brew the coffee two times using the little espresso size and it was okay only because I didn't like the coffee. I ran out to the supermarket tonight and the only dark coffee I could find was Martinson but I needed to try (yuck). So the 2nd time I tried it with Maxwell house and ran it twice through with espresso size and I like the cup of coffee it made. The only thing is the 2nd time we did it running it twice through the thing leaked over. My son things maybe he moved it when putting down the handle or something. If I can get it to work without spilling all over then I can live with this coffee. Maxwell and Folgers are my first choice for regular brew coffee but I can buy DD in costco too. So, I thank you for your suggestion and I'm feeling better about this purchase.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I tried to search ekobrew filters in amazon but didn't see it. I do see other types of k cup filters. I like the one with the flat bottoms because I can fill them at night and they can sit of the counter. They also have paper filters but they are expensive or can become expensive since they are $10.00 for 50.

first let me say...I LOVE MY KEURIG! I have had two over a 3 year period...best customer service ever. I use my K-cup almost exclusively. I use my favorite coffee (Cameron's) & filtered water for the best flavor. When new, I ran alot of plain water thru it to get rid of the plastic taste. Think of it as "new car smell"...lol...I wouldn't give up just yet, if I were you. I really, truly am in love with it! You could try cleaning it with vinegar, too. I clean mine once a month. Good luck, hope it works out for you!

The "My K cup" is useless. Get an Ekobrew cup on Amazon.com. They work great! Rivals the coffee I get from a k cup, without the expense!

I've used the Solofil cup too but the Ekobrew is the best one on the market.
