Ear Candle - Good or Bad... or neither?

Started 1323665880.26 in Beauty Banter | Last reply 1324058773.313 by Dharma_Initiative

I have seen this done on tv and it looks so disgusiting, yet i cant say that I am not tempted to try it. Just the thought of cleaning out all that wax and dirt out of my ears makes me want to do it.

Has anyone done it and fouind it to be beneficial in anyway?

It actually doesn't clean the wax out, what you see on tv is the smoke and wax of the candle not ear wax. It does feel good so if you have a earache the heat from the smoke feels good but otherwise it doesn't do anything benificial

It IS a good way to clean the wax out of your ears and you will be amazed at how much comes out! It is not smoke and candle wax you will see, it's wax from your ear!! Do take caution though if you have any type of inner ear problem. The last time my mom had her ears candled, she had a spelll of vertigo. We're not absolutely sure that the candleing caused it, but she wasn't diagnosed with any other problem. Just be sure that you know how to perform it and be careful!!! :)

I LOVE candeling my ears! It is FANTASTIC! I have such narrow ear cannels and lots of scar tissue so it its difficult for my ears to drain. I do it once a month two times in each ear. Dont do it if you have an infection. CRAZY about it!{#emotions_dlg.lol}

Yes, ear wax does come out. The heat melts the wax which is carried up with the smoke and is burned off along with the wax with which the fabric tube ("candle") is coated . The flame is at least 3-5 in. tall and pretty hot. You must use the right angle to make sure the heat goes into the ear and not up in the air. Read reviews of people who have actually used them at places like iherb and vitacost.

My Ear Nose and Throat doc told me they are very dangerous and he has seen many ruptured and perferated ear drums because of them.

Previously "Justa" "JAWAM" or justawifeandmom changed it because I was tired of the comments.

I have candled my ears before and after having my ears cleaned by my ENT doctor ( I have very narrow ear canals and have this done 2 times a year) and The candle looked exactly the same before and after so NO WAY was it my ear wax in the candle before or after! Do your research it doesn't work!

Never ever mess with your ears. See a doctor. (Deafness runs in my family)

The doctor I grew up with always said to put nothing in your ears smaller than your elbow.{#emotions_dlg.unsure}

However, I have seen several people have their ears candled and have seen some pretty strange stuff come out. I know some have said it made a difference and some not. Perhaps the difference was the quality of candles and/or the expertise of the person doing the actual candeling.

I have to say it has kept me wondering for years if it really does work. Personally, I have not had it done, but have been considering it lately. If I do decide to have it done,I will post back what I think.

my husband swears by this!! he was having ringing in his ear and a fullness feeling and some tenderness in front of his ear...last time he had this he went to the doctor who proceeded to flush/clean his ear and he said it was the most excruciating experience...the gal at my healthfood store recommended this & viola!!!...soooooo much junk came out and all symptoms gone immediately{#emotions_dlg.thumbup} we do this now about once a month and he is free of ringing & tenderness...it works for us anyway!

Our Dr told my Hubby to buy the ear drops that works for wax. He said not to use the candle as it can be harmful to the ear.

My doctor said it is dangerous to use an ear candle. He said some wax is actually good for your ears - it helps prevent water and bacteria. Of course some people get too much and it should be removed by a doctor.

I never heard of this. Please don't take offense, but the first think I thought of when I read the title of this post was Shrek pulling wax from his ear and using it as a candle. {#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}

This can be very dangerous and cause scarring or punctured eardrum. Definitely not worth it ! It excessive ear wax is a problem the Dr. can remove it safely and painlessly, otherwise it is there for a reason and should be left alone.

I saw a demo on TV years ago. They put one of these candles in a glass of water and smoke came out. So unless the glass had a bad case of ear wax, I don't think it works.

Scientific studies have shown that ear candling really does not remove ear wax. Supposedly the burning of the candle creates a vacuum that removes the ear wax. A vacuum that strong would cause rupturing of the ear drum. There have been studies that examined the composition of the "ear wax" that was candled out of a person's ear and it's not ear wax, it's candle wax and smoke. Also studies have been done that candled other things than ears (like cups, tubes) as a control group to compare against candles used in people's ears. The control group candles and the ear candles produced the same orangey wax.

The heat from the candling could help alleviate pain or discomfort in the ear, but it's risky. If you do a search for ear candling, make sure to read the links to actual scientific studies and not just the articles by proponants for ear candling.

I would go to my ENT and see what he can do for cleaning.......

Cassiem, exactly! I wrote this in a previous post that I tried ear candling before and after having my ears professionally cleaned by my ENT (have to every 6 months) anyway while it felt good the after candle looked exactly like the before candle I did prior to professional cleaning and so after that I knew for sure it was bogus.

I saw an expose of these things on tv. If you open the candle before lighting, the gunk is already in there.

Yes, its amazing....... the amount of wax that is removed is amazing! The important thing is to buy from a reputable health food store, all candles are not equal.

Secondly, remove candle 1/2 way and clean out the candle as it can be blocked which doesn't allow wax to keep being removed from the ear.

I've turned others on to this method and everyone of them have had great results!

I have used ear candling several times. The first time it did a great job - and believe me, the wax was from my ears, not the hollow candle.

The last time, though, I got an ear infection. I don't think it was just a coincidence, so I won't do it again.

I've never tried it, however once when my ears were getting pretty clogged, I went out and bought some cigarettes. I put a damp towel on my left shoulder, lit the cigarette and put it into my left ear. I made sure to tap off the ash from time to time. Then I switched ears. It actually worked, but it made the house smell like cigarettes.

It looks like ear wax, but it's not. The candle cannot provide strong enough suction to pull the ear wax up. Scientific studies have analyzed the "ear wax" in the candles and it's not ear wax. It's candle wax and smoke. Ear candles stuck into an empty glass will produce exactly the same amount and color/consistency of wax as candles put into a human ear.

It works good for removing unwanted ear hair if you put the flame near the ear opening~~

You put a lit cigarette into your ears?

You will always have people trying crazy things and saying it worked for them. I would classify this under "don't try this at home." Sounds too risky to me. I won't do crazy things involving my ears or eyes. JMO!
