I'm sorry to hear that you are in pain! The funny thing is I suddenly have pain in my tooth also which started yesterday (why do these things always happen on a weekend?) on my upper right side. I think I had a root canal done there last year or it could have been the tooth next to it. I don't think you can feel pain on a tooth if you had a root canal on it but I could be wrong.

I'm calling the dentist first thing on Monday. I hope it someting minor for both of us!

do you grind your teeth? do you wear a night guard. Grinding causes lots of tooth aches, and can cause a tooth to need a root canal after time. If you don't already get a night guard and use it. Most people do grind or clench their teeth. Stress causes more grinding, and we all know there is alot of that in our lives.

firestripes, I hope your dentist finds a simple solution. Sometimes a root canal can fail, requiring another one. Sometimes pain in the mouth can be referred to another area, so it may not be the root canal tooth at all.

I can certainly sympathize. I just had two wisdom teeth extracted on Thursday because I bit down on a popcorn kernel and cracked my lower tooth. It wasn't too problematic at first, and the dentist couldn't figure out what tooth was cracked. About 8 weeks ago, it got a little worse and I was able to figure out that it was the wisdom tooth, so I made an appointment with an oral surgeon.

I know you are fearing another root canal. But, with the recuperaton time, and pain, involved with these extractions, I would have rather had a root canal. And, I'm the biggest baby when it comes to dental procedures.

Good wishes coming your way. Let us know what your dentist finds.

Oh dear! When that happened to me, I lost the tooth. I hope you get to the dentist right away. I'm so sorry for your pain. There is nothing worse than dental problems.

Yes a crown can crack and a root canal can sometimes leave a tiny piece behind. Sorry for the bad news--now the good--- since you are such a baby- ( You said it not me) Have you considered being put under? (laughing gas- forgot the technical name) you should really talk to your dentist about it if it's so upsetting for you. I was just at my dentist last week- I hate the shots too- especially the ones' in the roof of your mouth!!! But to my surprize they've updated the process and evidentally the shot since I barely felt it and it happened super fast to numb it and didn't "numb" my entire half side of my face for hours later like it used to so maybe if you haven't been there in a while you'll also be in for a pleasant surprise that it isn't as bad as it used to be--- assuming your dentist has been up to date! Good luck!

I feel so bad for you. Tooth pain is the worse. Had a root canal about 15 years ago and ended up having the tooth pulled. Hope all works out better for you. Keep us posted. So sorry.

It's not uncommon. You probably have an infection, which can be determined with an xray. You may need to retreat the tooth. An endodontist can work right through the crown so you don't need to pay for a new one.

Same here - I expect you will lose that tooth. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Good luck.

Ditto. They thought my tooth cracked at the root. Pulled it and didn't see a crack. However, the jaw pain stopped when the tooth was gone.

I had a root canal that failed after 12 years and caused me a major infection, even a cyst up in my gum. Ended up having the tooth pulled, lucky for me it was way in the back.

This same thing just happened to my Mom. The endodontist was able to save the tooth (this type of problem req. a specialist). But she too had a cyst in the gum and was antibiotics after the culture came back. They could not even work on her tooth until the infection was under control.

In the end it was all good.

Wishing you health and happiness.

I haven't read the other replies as I wanted to post this right away.

DO NOT IGNORE THIS PAIN! SEE YOUR DENTIST RIGHT AWAY.

I had a root canal many years ago. After about 5 years, it started hurting. It would hurt a few days and then would go away for a while, then come back. Last year, it started hurting horribly and wouldn't stop. When I finally got into the dentist, he gave me antibiotics for an infection and sent me to the dental surgeon because it looked like the root of the tooth had broken.

Sure enough, it had. The surgeon removed the tooth and was shocked at how severe the infection was and couldn't believe I hadn't told someone before. He even asked if I had been feeling poorly due to all the infection pumping throughout my body. It took him quite a while to get all the infection out. I also had to pay more for the implant than I expected because he had to use more bone grafting material due to the bone loss from the infection.

I have had LOTS of root canals. One of my first ones had a tooth that did not have a straight root. The dentist went as far as he could and left the bent tip of the root alone. Ten years later the same tooth abscessed. I went to see a specialist and she did a root canal on the tip part of the root that was giving me trouble. It was quite a procedure because they had to cut into the gum and go from the top of the root down, BUT it was well worth it. I have not had any problems since. (Since I already had the expense of the original root canal and crown, I thought it was worth it. Otherwise they would have had to pull the tooth and put in a bridge.)

I know too much to go back an' pretend.

I have one root canal. Many years later my dentist found a little bit of something under there so he sent me back to my root canal guy. Sometimes they don't get it all. Fortunately, my guy (who's also a friend, so maybe that helped) went back in there for free.

He said that he preferred to go back in there & make sure he got it all cleaned out and if that didn't work he'd have to do it surgically. Fortunately, all seems fine again. It happens I guess.

I hope yours goes well.

It may be you have an infection - bacteria may have gotten around and under the crown and seeped into the root area. If so you'll need an antibiotic to rid the pain and inflammation before any other work can be done.

Crowns can crack - teeth with root canals are always what I consider guarded condition - agree about the night guard to prevent grinding - this can be death to any expensive dental work.

I is very important that this is looked at, x-rayed and taken care of ASAP before it gets to the point of no repair and will need extracted.

Root Canals are not the final end to a tooth's issues. I have had many root canals and two of those teeth have gone to the next stage. This means infection. And, neither of mine were caused by a cracked crown. It is just something that happens and not something that you hear about.

Get to a dentist first thing Monday! You will probably be referred to an endodontist and they specialize in this very issue. The tooth may or may not be saved. I had one that was saved for five years and then the second time, it had to be pulled. The other tooth had to be pulled immediately. The good thing is that whatever procedure is done, you will be out of pain quickly after it is done.

Best wishes to you and let us know how it goes.

thanks ladies

how painful is it to have a tooth pulled?

chickenbutt1310313983.73323440 PostsRegistered 1/16/2006chickentown

In my experience it was painless to have a tooth pulled. They numb it up really well and *bam* it's done. Just like that unless there are complications, but that w/b the minority.

Same as chickenbutt - I didn't feel any pain with the extraction. Numbed me up really good.

I also had a root canal that wasn't able to be completed in my dentist's office because of a bend at the bottom. Several years later it started hurting. I was referred to a specialist who was able to get to the root quickly and painlessly with no cutting. He went through the root just as my dentist had but must have had other equipment or a different technique; it was over in 5 min. or less. I was also treated with antibiotics.

Tooth extraction - let's just say I'm a real baby about pain. I've had four wisdom teeth extracted and one other tooth. Each time I've insisted on being put to sleep. Glad I did and would again. Good luck and hope it's an easy fix.

Same here - extraction was painless both times. I went to an oral surgeon. The recovery pain is virtually nothing compared to the pain prior to extraction.

My tooth extraction was quick and painless, very little bleeding after.
