~ do you wash your hair before you get it highlighted? ~

Started 1310215876.373 in Beauty Banter | Last reply 1310609338.773 by she05

I am due to get my hair highlighted again this week and different hair dressers have told me different things. One told me that "no, don't bother - the solution works better if you don't," and the other one said to "yes, do wash your hair before you come in.

I'm confused ..... what do you all do and think about this?

Not usually, unless you have a ton of product in your hair.

I will wash my hair the night before so that I get all the gunk out of it. I have heard the same two things that you heard from different hairdressers.

I do not wash my hair the day of getting highlights. The natural oils on your scalp help prevent irritation, or so I have been told.

I wash my hair that morning. I do not put any product on my hair though such as styling gel or leave in conditioner.

I never leave the house without washing my hair ever.

My hair dresser told me never wash it that day. It is harder for the color to bond to the hair. She always does a good job and never steers me wrong so I just wash it the day before!

Hi Abbycat!! Before becoming an aesthetician, which is what I do now I was a corrective color specialist for over 10years. That is all I did all day long was color hair.

The only reason to wash your hair before you color it is if you have a lot of build up or a lot of product on your hair. If you aren't sure what a lot means exactly then then if I were you I would wash my hair the night before I go in for a color. Make sure it is the night before and not the day of the color, you will have less chance to irritate your scalp and you want to make sure hair is COMPLETELY dry when coloring it.

Hope that helps and that you love your new color!!

I don't wash it the day I get it highlighted.

Several years ago, Good Housekeeping Magazine ran an article about this (sorry, don't remember the date). At that time they advised against washing your hair the day of the appointment because color adheres better to "dirty" hair. I remember they also said to wait as long as possible after coloring to wash your hair so that the color will adhere to the hair better. They also suggested using a clarifying shampoo the day before if you use a lot of styling products - especially the ones with silicone (so the color sticks to the hair not the silicone). I never wash my hair the day of the appointment and my color looks great.

No.....I do not wash my hair before getting it highlighted. Hairdesser told me the color works better if hair is not squeaky clean. As busy as she is if it would cut time off that 2 hour appointment to wash hair ahead of time she would surely tell her clients.

As a matter of fact, the one time I did wash my hair before the appt she sprayed hairspray in it!!!

I wash my hair the day before a coloring/highlighting appointment. And then I wait 3 days after the appointment to wash my hair again. I have very dry hair, so waiting the 3 days is not a problem for me. My color does not fade as fast as I see on some of my friends.

No they never wash mine before putting the highlights in.

I wash it the morning before I get my highlights. Then I wait 2-3 days after getting them to wash again. I have read/been told that dirty hair works better and that the longe you let it stay before you wash the better the results. I typically only wash my hair every other day any way though. This seems to work well for me, so this is the routine I stick to when getting highlights.

I never wash mine before coloring. The color works better on unwashed hair and the natural oils in your hair help protect your scalp.

One time I was in Sephora and they had Fredderic Fekkai reps there. They said for three days prior to coloring your hair, wash daily with a claifying shampoo to remove any build up on your hair. They said the day you color, don't wash it. Because of the clairifying shampoo removing all the build up off your hair, your new color is starting with a clean canvas so the color will be more even, look better and last longer. It sounded a bit strange to me, but when I did it using the exact same haircolors, it did look better and I did get compliments on what a beautiful shade my hair was.

Always end the day with a positive thought. No matter how hard things were, tomorrow's a fresh opportunity to make it better.

What is a good and inexpensive claifying shampoo to use? I just got my hair done yesterday and I'm pleased, but will try shampooing for 3 days prior to getting my hair done with a clairying shampoo prior to getting it done the next time and see how it turns out. Thanks

No. Hairdressers have told me it's better NOT to shampoo before color applications. My hairdresser always colors and highlights and then shampoos, cuts, and styles. Seems to work out well.

Prell (the green one), is a great clarifying 'poo.

I don't wash my hair before my root color. I also do not wash my hair for 48 hours maybe 72 after I my stylist colors my hair.

I don't. My hairdresser prefers it this way. She said the oils protect tha scalp, don't affect the color or processing, and it's easier for her to part the hair and get closer to the roots. Works for me!!

Suave & White Rain make clarifying shampoo too for around $1. - $2. It doesn't matter if it's cheap because you are only using it to clarify. Just make sure you don't use it after you color or your haircolor will fade.

I have actually been told not to wash for two days before I highlight my hair. They said that your hair can't be too clean or the highlighting won't take properly. So if I am getting it done on Wednesday morning, Sunday night is the last time I wash my hair. But you know everyone can say something different. Works for me thats all I know!

Never wash mine before coloring/highlighting (at least two to three days) and do not wash it for two to three days after color/highlights. That's what I have been doing for 30 years!
