Clarisonic breaking me out! Anyone else? Help!

Started 1297899975.257 in Beauty Banter | Last reply 1297917203.69 by mother bear

I bought the Clarisonic years ago, but when I started using it I broke out and under the counter it went. Well, I started using it about 2 weeks ago and again my skin is breaking out. I am 30, lifelong sufferer of acne, and I am not sure I can keep using something that breaks me out constantly. Has anyone else not been able to use it, or do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

did it break you out from the beginning or after a week or two? I say this because if the bristles had bacteria on it that could cause breakouts.

You may also just not be able to tolerate the Clarisonic on your skin.

Lots of people have not been able to use the Clarisonic for various reasons, including break-outs, broken capilleries, irritation and causing issues with Rosacea. It's definitely not for everyone and especially sensitive skin. I bought one and returned it after finding it didn't leave my skin one bit cleaner, smoother or softer than a clean washcloth. I later found out my dermatologist doesn't recommend them (or similiar appliances) due to many of the problems listed above, and unseen damage that is being done to deep tissue. If you have had breakouts more than once, I'd not use it again.

do a search on this on this board, this has been a common complaint from acne sufferers.

Katz ~ I clean it quickly with Purity. Not sure if that works well?

BE ~ My derma sells them...I guess because I hear so many great things about them I wanted it to work for me.

Mae ~ Will search, thanks.

I have always thought (and had the experience) that any product that creates more exfoliation than I am used to, like the Clarisonic, is really just unplugging blocked pores. I then get breakouts in a faster time period then I would without the increased exfoliation. Even happens with RetinA and other retinol products. Also peels.

I had some increased breakouts when I started the Clarisonic, too. They lessened after a month or so and my pores have remained clearer. Just my experiences! Since you have it, maybe you could use it a little less frequently and build up to daily or twice daily use?

I was going to buy the Mia right before Christmas and noticed that there were some people reporting breakouts and attributed it to purging. I started Googling and found some pages that said it wasn't purging, but acne caused from irritation.

My skin is very sensitive so I opted to not buy it.

Are you using the brush specifically for the sensitive skin? I guess it helps to use that brush.

The first time I bought a Clarisonic Mia, I used it morning & evening. That made me break out, so I sent it back. Then, after reading some other ladies' experiences, I realized that I was probably using the Mia too much. So I bought one (again) & only use it at night. I'm doing fine! I also use the gentle brush, not the "normal" brush.

Hope that helps!

OP -- Have you tried the Clarisonic with a cleanser OTHER than Purity? I'd suspect Purity over the Clarisonic as the break-out culprit. As least that's how it was for me.

I am considering not using mine after reading this and other posts several times today. I have used mine 1-2 times per day since the beginning of December and have not noticed any significant improvement in my skin. It has done nothing for blackheads or breakouts. I have actually broken out quite a bit.

Tried and tried and tried to use the Clarisonic. No matter what I did, including sterilizing the brush heads, I had horrible break outs. It's just not for everyone. Send it back.

I have used mine for over a year and love it. If I were you, I would use it for a month to see if the breakouts don't subside because it could be bringing them to the surface but once cleaned out, your skin will clear up. And I'd recommend only using it once a day.

I really don't think anyone should use the Clarisonic TWICE a day... especially someone that's already having some sensitivity issues with it. Using it twice daily is definite over-exfoliation in my opinion.

i use it only twice a week. if i use it more frequently, my skin won't like it either.

I saturate mine with an antibacterial soap after every use-about once a week and no problems...I think since it is sweeping bacteria and oils out of the pores, they need to be thoroughly cleaned off the brush, or they will remain there, only to be spread around the next time, possibly causing a break-out...

I had to stop using mine because of breakouts. Too late to send it back.

I broke out with huge cystic type breakouts ( not my usual type) each time I attempted to use it. I tried several separate times... so my unit sits in my closet as I had it too long to return. Don't have the heart to actually put it in the trash since I payed so much. Not sure what keeping it will accomplish except collect dust, haha! This is not for everyone for sure...

That's why I got rid of mine. It destroyed my skin.

I use mine nightly and really love it. No breakouts and I can tell my skin is clean and glowing. Obviously it's different for everyone. Sorry it doesn't work for some of you.
