Wen and Hair Loss

Started 1295618195.157 in Beauty Banter | Last reply 1400376613.98 by NC Bandwagon

I know there are a lot of posts on this, but I wanted to bring this to the forefront again. First and foremost I do not have any medical issues and I'm in good health.

I have been using WEN for about 6-9 months. The first 3 months my hair was great, things were awesome, I loved it and wrote glowing reviews. In the last 6 months, I have lost an increasing amount of hair. This past Wednesday will be the last day I use WEN for a long while, maybe forever. I have 2 bald spots, not significant, about the size of a dime/nickel. I say they aren't significant because I have thick, full, naturally curly hair, it will cover for me when it's dry. I was loyal. I even brought it to my stylist when he cut my hair, he said I lost a little more hair compared to usual, but nothing too significant. Again, my curls hide and cover a lot of unsavory things.

I'm looking up to getting this resolved, but given the multiple hair types I'm seeing that people say they have in these posts, it's disheartening that this is happening to so many. I would love for Chaz to mention this or maybe figure out why.

I'm going back to my TreSemme for curly hair. Sorry Chaz, I don't want to be bald by 40.

Ok I am glad I found this thread again. I replied to this when I first started using the Wen Pom. I said I love it, my hair was bouncy, wavy, full really nice. Ok, to back up a little. I have thin, fine hair about to the top of my shoulders. Usually laid flat, but when I started using the Wen for the first time I noticed my hair seemed fuller, thicker, bouncy.

Now about 2 months later in my crown area (which is my problem area for thinness) it seems to be worse. My hair because of cow licks and growth pattern grows forward in that area anyway so I am always fighting the pattern to lay it back to cover this area better. Anyway yesterday and today after showering and washing my hair and drying it I thought it was looking a little "baldy" not super bad that I can't cover it up with back combing but just thinner in that problem area. Yesterday I used my regular shampoo and conditioner that I used before the Wen and until I notice this improving I am not using my Wen again.

Yes Wen does make your hair feel bouncy and healthy but for someone like myself who already is hair follicle challenged I am going back to my regular shampoo and conditioner. When I styled my hair this morning I really didn't notice any difference in my styled hair, it wasn't frizzy like Chaz says happens with regular shampoo. I think it is how you dry it and not to over dry it and rub to much. I do use the Living Proof thickening cream as well but that is all the styling aids I put in my hair. I also have some dry scalp and thought the Wen improved that but I'll have to find something else for that but for now I am not going to use Wen again.

Are there others like me who liked at at first and then noticed thinning?

maybe it's from all the extra massaging necessary to clean the scalp with WEN compared to other shampoo's that is causing this? OR maybe it's the menthol...or possibly the build up of cones over time in the hair follicles causing them to either slow down or in some stop generating new hair growth??

Who knows....but I sure hope you ladies post back in say 6months on whether or not your blad or thin areas have filled in with new hair growth.

Mine is also in the closet as of these last weeks....I found that since a hair coloring incident that it was bothering my already burned scalp so much I couldn't handle using it....I could use the remoist on the ends....but not the cleanser on my scalp at all. Now I read all these posts and think....what do I do with that brand new CA 32oz I have in my closet?

I know tsavorite me too, I wonder if we could just use it as a leave in and only put it on the ends and not near the scalp.

I will keep coming back today to see if there are new posts regarding this. I never massaged my scalp like that either. I wish Chaz or his company would address this. They Have to know about it!

My hair is falling out too. I'm upset because the first time I used Wen, (about 2 months ago) I received nothing but compliments all day. People I work with thought I'd gotten extensions!

However, the last few days I've noticed long strands of hair coming out in the brush while I blow dry. I mean, a very noticeable amount. I've only used Sweet Almond Mint. Is that what you guys have used? It does have a cool tingle to the scalp, maybe it's witch hazel or something?

Anyway, I listened to Chaz this morning and just ordered the 16 oz. Fig. He said it was moisturizing so thought I'd try a different concoction? I'm staying away from Wen till the new one comes.

I was using the Pom with a little Tea Tree mixed in. I am not using any Wen for a while.

I know what you mean Girlo. I loved how my hair was feeling, bouncyl and healthy and better scalp issues, but I have fine thin hair too and can't risk losing it.

WOW, I am glad I found this post. I probably started using WEN 3yrs ago. I found myself seeing gobs of hair stuck on his comb, even using the wide end, & between my fingers. I could actually see it going down the drain. (which backed up regularly with all my hair) I just thought it was me, 55+thining hair, knowing you do lose hair. Hair everywhere!! I started looking for an alternative, since my hair started not responding to WEN. It got heavy and oily looking. (used Almond & Lavender). I am now trying the non-shampoo offered on HSN, Cutler Specialist. (for thin hair). It seems to me that my hair is not falling out as much. Been using this product since last Aug. (I think crs!!) Anyway, I am happy with the product and have been using it ever since. Sent the rest of my WEN to my daughter!!

Same thing happened to me. I really like the way it makes my hair feel, but I can't get it NEAR my scalp or my hair falls out. I do use the styling gel through, it is great and you can just put it on the ends.

Do you think we could use the cleansers as a leave in if we only put it on our ends and don't get it near our scalps?

ITA - there have been so many threads on this in the past but the "working theory" here seems to be that some of us must have a sensitivity to one or more of the ingredients in Wen - possibly the menthol...

I loved everything about it for the first few months and then had quite noticable hair loss and a severely clogged shower drain :). My hair returned to normal after a few months off...

I was watching the WEN show earlier, and he claimed it would make your hair grow over time!!!! I've never used it and was going to try the lavender on easy pay.........

But my hair is already thinning and I CANT afford to lose more. Is this something that only happens over time? Is is the way you have to use the product?

What I'm hearing you all saying is that at first your hair was great....and then clumps coming out? Really? That's scary. So glad I found this thread I hope more WEN users reply with their experience!!!!

Thanks ladies.

I hope you are right bjm67 because my scalp never hurt or got irritated, it got better, less dry scalp issues but can't risk losing more of my fine already thin hair.

I may try a new organic shampoo and conditioner by Original sprout.

since so many of you ladies bring this up each time Chaz is on air- why don't you email him with your concerns?? I am sure they do not want to have you all spreading this around and would want to deal with it and put minds at rest. You all Bit*ch about WEN causing the hair loss- but what good is it if you do not take it to the top??

{#emotions_dlg.scared}Girls you are freaking me out but now that I'm reading this thread for the FIRST time I'm wondering if this has been MY PROBLEM too!

I notice I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo thin by my hairline; like YIKES...it was so thin that I had my hairdresser cut bangs because there was nothing that could be done with the baby fine hairs...........I've been using WEN for over 2 years and never ONCE considered it could be the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MY OH MY!!!!!!!!!!! I'm scared now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I missed using my WEN so bad, that I've been using it this week. But, there is no question that the crown of my head is showing more than it ever has.

My hair, like I've already said, looks great with WEN, the color the bounce. But, I'm worried about what I am terming "hair thinning," especially on the crown of my head.

I've been wondering, like Bopper, if I couldn't use another shampoo on my scalp and use the WEN on the rest of my hair or as a conditoner.

Also, I have a stock of WEN. Everytime a TSV has been presented, I've signed on the dotted line. Also, special offers. Until a shipment came prior to the holidays and I tried to fit it into a closet, I didn't realize how many bottles I hadn't realized how bottles I've accumulated . . .

I'm going to send that shipment back, but what do I do with the rest of those products?

Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, I really wanted WEN to not be the source of my hair thinning issues.

Why couldn't Chaz removed the menthol from one new "sensitive" to mentol product?

Emy

A friend of mine said she JUST heard Chaz say something about the possibility of allergic reaction using WEN. This would be the first time he has said something about this on air.

So, obviously, there must be something to this. I don't see these women b*tching, I see them being concerned and bringing it to others attention.

Good idea emy. Maybe if it was brought to his attention- he would make a menthol-free formula!

Wow, Red Convertible! That would be a major admission that Chaz and whoever is manufacturing this product for him do know that a number of women are having issues.

As popular as WEN has/is been and the posts saying how much women wanted to use this product combined with who knows people contacting CHAZ or the WEN manufacturer's themselves must have prompted that comment.

newport I have emailed the company twice and not heard back. We wouldn't have to spread it around if they would fix the issue now would we?

Here is the link from this morning where Chaz said it works for all people unless you have an allergic reaction to it and that can happen with anything.

Let me say I am so sorry for anyone with significant hair loss. I found out a few years ago I had hypothyroidism, and before it got corrected with medication I was losing hair by the hand fulls. I use Wen, but I pay careful attention to my scalp, and only use the types that pertain to my scalp condition - oily or dry (Tea Tree or Cucumber Aloe). I do not put the others on my scalp for the most part. Wen has done the opposite for my fine, thick hair. It has made it more thick and manageable, and I have not experienced this horrible issue at all. I believe it to be a great product, but I also think there may be an allergic reaction for some with the menthol, as it has come up in previous posts. Good luck with ironing out the issues. A good dermatologist would be able to help figure out the issue on a professional level, and work with you to correct it
