Is Retin-A still effective with an expired expiration date?

Ive been suing Retin-A for years. I get it off my sister who has used it for about 20 years. Well, the tube she just gave me has a date on it that has already expired. I asked her about this and she said that its still good and that she has used tubes pleny of times that have already expired. For anyone that uses this, or has more knowledge of it, can you tell me, do you think the tube is still effective once its gone past the exp date?

I take it by the rest of your post that you have been using Retin-A for years and not suing them, correct? And the first part was just a typo.

Anyway...if the tube is sealed and you are generally sure the product has been stored properly (cool & dry) then it's most likely that it will retain most if not all of its efficacy for 1-2 years past its printed expiration date. If when opened you notice any change in consistency or texture or odor from how the product usually should appear than it's probably best to discard. If any part of it seems hardened or cracked...get rid of it.

eta: That said...if you're not comfortable using it, don't.

I know this wasn't part of the question but...there are many drugs that do degrade more quickly (liquids or insulin for example) and one should be careful with those expiration dates. Check with a doctor or pharmacist for things like that.

OMG, Ohioglamgal, YES, lol, I meant to say USING, not SUING, lol. I just now raelized that I typed it wrong... lol Your anser makes sense. I havent even opened it up yet. I still have some left of antoher tube Im using right now, but I will be sure to check that the consistency of it is the same when I do go to open it. Thanks again.

Ha ha! I'm sorry, but that has to be one of the funniest typo's I have ever read!

Edited to tell you that I mean no offense, I just thought that "suing" instead of "using" was really funny and cute.

Take care.

Sure. It is sort of a funny typo, like 57babe said too!

At first I was like if you're suing them why do you want to keep using it? Anyway...glad you got the gist of my answer.

And again...if any medications for anyone require the full strength or dose for true 'medical' or life preserving issues...it's best to make sure meds are fresh...better safe than sorry.

Jamie,

As long as its been stored properly as someone else mentioned, its typically good for about a year after its expiration date.

I agree, use it unless it's more than 1 to 2 years past the expiration date.
