Seche Vite - What am I doing wrong?

Started 1284312993.257 in Beauty Banter | Last reply 1284337752.203 by LoSmo

I finally got the seche vite top coat. It completely flaked off within a day! it was literally feeling right off the nail in large chunks. Am I doing something wrong??

Never had that happen in the years I've been using it. You do need to apply it to wet polish and as you know, Seche Vite is kind of thick. I tend to "spread" it on barely moving it rather than "polishing" it on, if that makes sense.

Did just the Seche Vite peel off or did the color polish come off with it?

Did you put it on natural nails? Often times those products only work on fake nails.

I'm not sure how you can use a top coat wrong.

I do a base coat, then two coats of polish, wait about 5 minutes, then put on a thick coat of the Seche Vite Fast Dry Top Coat.

I've never had any peeling of the product, nor any of the "shrinkage" that some others talk about.

But everybody is different, so there's no one product that is best for everyone.

Gosh, I don't know what went wrong either. I love it and have to agree with NR and Katharita, I have never had a problem with it. It is really thick and I've applied it to slightly wet polish and dry polish and it has never come off. Was there any lotion on your nails maybe? Did just the top coat come off or all the colored polish too? So sorry that happened, but don't give up...we'll figure out what happened!!!

ETA: I have natural nails.

Did u use a base coat first? Seche Vite will not adhere to natural nails, it needs to be brushed on over WET polish.

Needs a base coat.

Seche Vite is a decent top coat, but an outstanding top coat is Sally Hansen Mega Shine Extended Wear in the mirrored bottle, the absolute best. Dries in 60 seconds to the smoothest glass like finish I have ever seen

It's happened to me. I can completely peel off all the layers on my polish (base, color, and top coat) with one pull. I don't know if I was putting it on too thick?

I switched to Essie's "Good to Go" and love it. High gloss and dries nails instantly.

The Salon where I go for mani/pedis uses the Essie...and I had such good results without chipping...I bought it.

HERE is what you are doing wrong, you are letting the last coat of the colored polish to dry then applying the Seche to it. You have to apply it while its still wet on the nails, so as soon as you are done with the second hand of polish is when you want to apply the seche top coat to it.

I agree, you have to put it on while the color is still wet.

I've never had a problem with it.

I've started using Lippman Addicted to Speed at home (I bring the Seche Vite to the salon for them to use) and I don't think it's any faster than SV.

You don't have to use a base coat, or polish and it doesn't matter whether the polish is dry or wet (of course it dries polish fast so the benefit is to use it while nails are wet) It must have been the nailpolish that peeled. I have used this product forever and never had a problem and when I worked doing nails, I never had a problem and the customers loved it. It's a great product don't give up on it.

LoSomo - I thought I was the only one who could not use Seche Vite. Every salon I have ever gone to loves this, but my polish comes off in sheets when it is applied. The tech I go to now swears by this, and has tried it on me and finally gave up. It works on my toes but not my fingers. She tried Sally Hansen nail strengthner as a topcoat one day. It worked beautifully and has been using on me ever since. Another client of hers loves the Sally Hansen product and that is why she decided to try on me. Hope you find a winner because it sure is frustrating to have a mani only last two days. The other thing she uses on me is Stickey as my base.

I'm not sure how'd you know it was Seche Vite topcoat that was causing your polish to peel off. Isn't it the base coat that determines how well the polish will adhere to your nails?

I use it as a top coat over my polished nails. It works wonderfully. Make sure before polishing your nails they are clean and dry; free of any hand lotion.

I've never had a problem.

Well I found that just about any other topcoat that was used worked better than Seche. So I just assumed it was the Seche. I know people who swear by it but just does not work for me.

Ok. I think i found out where i went wrong. I used it on my natural nails - no base coat - no polish. i thought it would work as a clear polish.. ill have to give it a try with polish underneath.

While im at it, any recommendations for a plain old clear polish?

Thanks everyone!
