Shingles - how many times can they come back?

Started 1282761614.917 in Among Friends | Last reply 1282967699.973 by adelle38

My brother is now down with Shingles again for the second time! I didn't know this was possible! He had Chicken Pox when he was small, got shingles when he was 18 and in college and is now 55 and they are coming back! Is this common? Does anybody know?

It's quite common and each time they recur, another episode is more likely. When I hit 60 my doctor recommended I get the shingles vaccine and I'm glad I did.

I had the chicken pox as a child and got an episode of shingles when I was 20 but I haven't had another episode. The virus lives in the nerve endings and it can be triggered by stresses in life, when the body goes go handle something else and doesn't keep the virus under control. That is how the doctor explained it to be when I had my episode.

Shingles is a virus in your system and can flare up at anytime, usually when a person is stressed or their immune system is weakened. Anyone who has ever had chickenpox is at risk for getting shingles. It occurs mostly over the age of 60 but can happen to younger people.

I have had shingles 3 times. I have lupus and am on immunosuppressants, (chemo drugs) thus I take Famvir in a small dose (Shingles mediation) daily as a precaution.

Chicken Pox in 1957 and Shingles in 1986.

You only have to mention shingles and I run screaming from the room........when I got the shingles I came into contact with some moron who had contracted chicken pox from his kids and didn't want to stay home...at the time I knew nothing of the correlation between the two.....I was out of work for six weeks and in terrible pain for many months more.

Now if someone comes to work sick, any any kind of sick, I would ask them to leave and not jeopardize the health of their fellow workers....

Hi Ladies.....I do know what it is and have read up about it online, but I just didn't know you could get it again and again, and wondered if others have gotten it more than once also. I was not aware there was a vaccine for it. My brother has been under alot of stress with his business and a few years back became diabetic, although he is very thin and not heavy as alot of people nowadays is that gets diabetes.

I am not sure if he is seeing a Dr. or what, as I just found out last night from my folks. It was not fun last time he got it and he was alot younger then. Wish I knew how to help.

Did anyone watch 19 kids and counting? The episode where most of the kids had chicken pox? I turned onto it and I think I heard the father say (they were talking about the good things about having chicken pox) that they would NOT get shingles. Did anyone else hear this?

I had chickenpox as a child, now an adult with an immune suppressed disease, take Cellcept which is an immunosuppressant, also haue a broken back and guess what...I AM UNDER STRESS. My DH, my caregiuer, came down with shingles in Nouember....that was quite a dilemna as I was definitely a high risk patient. DH continued to take care of me but kept areas couered and was on medication. I could not be uaccinated because I would get the disease but was put on Ualtrex. We slept apart for weeks, kept laundry separate and I did not get them and hope to neuer. Not a good thing!

Shingles can recur over and over. Shingles is caused by a herpes virus, a cousin to the kind of herpes that causes cold sores. And like cold sores, the shingles virus can break out over and over, especially when you're under stress.

Get the vaccine!

This may sound nutty and I am not in the medical field, nor pretend to be, but I take L-Lysine a couple of times a week....

Shingles (same family as the cold sore virus), lays dormant in the nerves, it comes to life (breakout) during stressful times, my son gets 3-4 per year in his neck and eye lid, sometimes it is painful, most of the time if he takes the valtrax right away, it goes away after 4 days. It may come back to the same nerve endings, sometimes the Dr. said it can go to to other places in the body.

He has had it since 5 years old, he was diagnosed in kindergarden, he had chicken pox when he was 2, some people keep getting it thru out their lifetime, some people don't. It isn't fair. My other son is fine, never had 1.

Sorry for your brother SuzyQ2, it is common.

Do you know if you have to take the shingles vaccine every year or is it just a one-time vaccine for life? Thanks.

I have never had the shingles, but I have had fever blisters like crazy! There are both part of the Herpes Simplex Virus 1 the Dr. told me I might think of taking the Shingles vaccine, but I haven't! If I have had shingles, I wouldn't think twice!!!

I had heard so many horror stories about shingles that I opted for the vaccine. Although I'm glad I took the shot, I had a bad reaction to it during the first couple of days following administration of the vaccine...fever, achiness, fatigue. My doctor said that's rare ; I was just "lucky" that way. After three days I was fine and now I don't have to worry about shingles.

One of my sons had it at age 4 and at age 20. We fully expect it to return sometime in his life.

Peace

chicken pox and shingles are both herpes zoster. the sun exposure influences the many types of herpes virus outbreaks.

The shingles vaccine (Zostavax) is a once-for-a-lifetime immunization. Many doctors recommend it after age 60 or so. Getting the vaccine does not totally guarantee that you won't get shingles, but it greatly reduces the probability, and if you should get shingles, the case will be much less severe. The vaccine is quite expensive (usually $300 or so), so check to see if your insurance covers it, and if not, you might want to do some price shopping. If you've ever had a bad case of shingles or suffered through a severe case with a family member, you know the vaccine is worth the cost!

I posted already but I get herpes simplex (cold sores) often. I am really afraid of getting shingles. Relatives got a script from their doctor for the vaccine and was told to go to one of the many local drug stores to have it administered. They went but were told to keep away from babys who have not been immunized for chicken pox and those who are immunosuppressed. BTW.....for 1 month. My cousins did not get the vaccine as they babysit their baby grandson. I see signs in front of local Walgrens and CVS drugstores advertising they have the vaccine. I am a high risk patient and if I would be near someone who had just that vaccine and I am by them in the store.....so, I just send DH in for my meds I am in a wheelchair so do not go into many stores when I am out. I hope Macys, Gymboree, JCP and Coldwater Creek never give the vaccine. : ) Actually, who knows who you are shopping next to. I have a mask to wear but rarely do right now unless in a medical facility....per doctor's instructions. Gives me chills thinking about trying things on that someone may have had shingles may have tried on. Yes, I am a nurse and also a worrier.

Feel badly for all who have to experience this......the young girl going through it twice. WOW! I never was aware of so many young people being afflicted.

After dealing with reaccuring shingles 8 times in one year, I went to an immune specialist - - that was 14 years ago. I can't seem to over come them on my own, so I take a daily dose of Valtrex - - it helps -- now, maybe once or twice a year they come back. I had a terrible case of chicken pox when I was a child - - This is my weakness - - I hate it. - -

~You may have the right - but that doesn't make it right~
