For Older people- Ever met an SUV you couldn't climb into?

Started 1292614372.2 in Among Friends | Last reply 1293750869.8 by SweetWood Max

Went somewhere with a friend recently. Her SUV was huge and I had to get into the back seat. No handle to pull myself up. I could not get my foot up high enough to climb in and had to throw myself in. It was very uncomfortable and I was sore the next day.

ps. Now I feel really old.

I have arthritis in my back and knees and hips and I find that an SUV or a pickup truck is the only vehicle I can ride in because I can't get up out of a car - they are toolow to the ground.We recently bought a new vehicle and my hubby was dissappointed that he had to get an SUV because he really wanted a sedan.

I have an SUV and very bad knees. I find it hard to get in and out of a regular sized car because of my knees. I love my SUV...

I also have a hard time a getting up and out of a car. (I'm in good physical shape, but I suffer from a lot of chronic pain.) I also don't like the feel of being low to the ground while driving. I feel I can see around me better if I'm higher up.

My husband, who's not very tall had a BIG Dodge Ram......I always said he needs to take a running start to get himself up into it.{#emotions_dlg.lol}

I am short, round, and have really bad arthritic knees. I hate huge SUV's where you have to climb up steps and heave yourself up with an overhead handle to "mount" the seat! I don't like cars that are very low to the ground, either. Give me my nice, large, comfy, slide-right-in sedan any time!

DH has a Ford F250 truck. I hate it {#emotions_dlg.mad} There is no running board and my legs are as long as the truck is high. I have to hold on and throw myself in or have him push me in.

I have arthritic knees and have no problem getting in and out of my Mini Cooper.

ballyk I think you are my new BFF! I also have a problem with low level cars although I loved them when I was twenty yr. old. A mini cooper sounds great to me.

A friend of mine used to have large Toyota 4-Runner & as I was hoisting my short self up & into the passenger's side seat, I about brained myself on the top frame of the door! I guess the slope of the roof was different or something & I wasn't paying sufficient attention, but I literally saw stars & had a knot on my head for several days afterward!

I'm short so I have trouble climbing into and jumping down from SUVs. For those of you who have trouble getting out of low cars, I got this for a friend and it's fantastic. He can now get out of my Honda easily.

I did not know that this item existed. Sure would have been helpful to have before I bought a small SUV in January. I think I will buy one for my sister. We both have knee problems.

thanks for the link, Donna

That's me everytime I get into my Z71 truck. They should have put an arm on the drivers side too. I am fairly tall and have to hoist my hip up on the seat, grab the steering wheel and hope I get in. On the other hand my elderly mom has to use a step stool and then I have to lift her into the seat, I am worn out by that time. I have chronic pain so it is difficult but having been in tons of car accidents in small sports cars years ago I feel safer driving high up. They are hel l to park and I am always hitting or backing into trees or curbs, luckily for everyone else I rarely drive anymore.

Must love dogs and cats

My daughter's boyfriend drives a Land Rover, and he can lower the entire vehicle to make it easier to climb in and out of.

No. I have more trouble climbing out of cars.

This has nothing to do with age. After a car accident, I didn't want the usual teacup-sized rental car and so I ended up with an SVU so huge, my feet didn't touch the ground when I was getting out! I had to throw my handbag in, and then crawl up and in. Not a graceful look.

Now I know why people in these things look like they never parked a car in their lives - they need a smaller car!!!!

Ladies, I have the solution. My son has a dodge ram truck. I would laugh myself silly because someone had to shove my butt up and into the truck. Well, I bought a foldable stool from the Q and it is perfect. You of course have to have someone else there to pick up the stool for you.

Well, I'm 41 and I've had trouble getting in my brother's truck, and it's really not even that tall.{#emotions_dlg.blushing}

You two made me laugh. BF has an F250 also and its rough but these short legs can eventually make it. The thing about it being high though scares me - there was a bridge we used to cross to get to work that had a barrier about as high as 3/4 of a normal car door. BUT in a F250, it looks like when we are crossing the bridge you look down directly into the water with no barrier when you look over the side. I have to close my eyes till we are over it.

My friend has a regular-size SUV but I'm short with short legs. I attempted to sit in the front passenger seat - I held the grab-bar & pulled my body up. When I exited the SUV, I literally jumped down onto the street - the drop was more than I expected.

We had an Ford Expedition. It was so hard to get in, when it died we both wanted something we could get into with out hurting our selves (in our late 70's) We got the Ford Edge and we just turn around and slide in .We love it , and it is cute too with all the bells and whistles.

Funny...my little mom has a hard time getting OUT of my car if she ever has to get into it in the first place. It's just a 2-door coupe and it's not that low but it's low enough that the seating is pitched just so that it makes it harder for her.

my MIL had this problem, she had a Volvo (suv) and a Highlander. She's rather large so it was difficult. She ended up getting a Subaru forester and loves it. She doesnt have to jump in it.
