Cascade dish soap ..what happened to it

Started 1287893884.02 in Among Friends | Last reply 1289636785.883 by Spunkyspouts

It is leaving a horrible white film over everything now, the formula must have changed or something. This stuff is ruining my dishes, what are you all using in your dishwashers, i need to change.

At the moment, I am using Finnish. If I put the glass lids from my hard annodized pots in the dishwasher, they often come out with a white film. Maybe it is not the Cascade. Is your dishwasher old? Mine is 20 y.o. and I really need a new one. Also, is your water hard? I am presently renting a water softener from Culligan and have them deliver salt. I do not like that either. So take your pick..........I don't know which to blame it on. I haven't seen that film on my glasses, but they are on the top rack. The lids are usually on the bottom. I have used Cascade and Electrasol. I don't think it is the detergent, but either the dishwasher or the water (don't think that softener works very well.....they tend to give you an old refurbished softener when you rent.)

I stopped using Cascade a few months ago because I had to hand wash about 1/4 of the dishes after I ran the dishwasher. I tried Sams Club dishwasher detergent just to see how it compared. And I am thrilled with Sam's Club. It cleaned the dishes and silverware.

I do not know what they did to Cascade but I will not buy it again. And I had happily used it for 30+ years. I think that if I ran the dishwasher with no detergent I would have had the same results as running it with the "NEW" Cascade..

If I use JetDry with Cascade it still works.

I was experiencing the same thing after I opened a new box of Cascade. I usually buy the HUGE box at Sam's, so it lasts a really long time. Since I did not have the time to get to our Sam's, which is about 40 miles away, I just bought a small box of Cascade at a local grocery store. I was experiencing the same thoughts--should I get a new dishwasher or what? Glasses were terrible, the plastic on the top shelf looked spotted, some of the silverware was clean but did not look good, so I had to rewash it. My husband put salt in the water softener, thinking that was it, but it continued. Then this topic was discussed about three weeks ago. If I remember correctly, dishwashing detergent can no longer have phosphate in it, and this is why it is not working as well.

Some of the other posters had various solutions--Lemi-Shine, put vinegar in the bottom after the water has run into the dishwasher and before it starts washing, were two of the most commonly posted. I use Lemi-Shine and my glasses, silverware, and everything else just sparkles again. For more ideas, maybe a subject search will lead you back to what has previously been posted about this same problem.

Good luck on finding out what works in your dishwasher and in your water. A new dishwasher--only as a last resort.

We were having the same problem and bought lemi shine at Target. It works like a charm; no more white film on our dishes, glasses, utensils, silverware.

thank you ladies, looks like i will have to buy a second product to use with it. my washer is relatively new and it seems like it has just been the past few months. i dont have a water softner, but never needed one until recently like 8 months ago i think is when it started. i have been rinsing things in CLR weekly and using just water on real hot sometimes. all i know is this soap makes everything look horrible.

It has been reformulated to be "greener". Unfortunately it has stopped doing what it's supposed to do- cleaning dishes! I'm getting resined to having to re-do my dishes after they come out of the dishwasher. Hate that!

I have to change my dish detergents often. I seem to have problems if I stick with one brand. Perhaps a thorough cleaning for the inside of your dishwasher is in order?

I have always used the liquid cascade,it does not leave andy residue, maybe that would work for you? I think the liquid is less messy, easier to pour in dispenser.

I did try seventh generation powder detergent and found that it left the white residue on my dishes.......so much for trying to go green!!!!

I use the Cascade Complete. It works great!! I do not like the regular Cascade.

They have removed the phosphates from all dishwashing products- so none are really good anymore- Consumer Reports gave the Finish pacs with the red dot the highest rating recently...I think they are "Finish Quantum"

My parents have noticed the same thing with cascade. They bought new glasses and washed them before using them. They came out with an awful white film that will not come off, no matter how hard you hand wash them. I'll let them know about the Sam's Club detergent.

I have found that using Cascade or Cascade Complete works great as long as I am sure to use a rinse agent such as Jet Dry or the Cascade brand.

I noticed - after using it - the Cascade I bought was made with Dawn. I noticed the box was a tad more yellow but didn't read the box - it is horrible stuff. Will either go back to the regular Cascade OR Finish. I had a sample box of Finish and it was excellent. At any rate, the problem I had with Cascade was I bought the yellowish box which said made with Dawn. No thank you!

I use liquid Cascade and haven't had any problems and just opened a new bottle. Will try the Finish after this is all gone after reading about the raves here.

OP- YES, I HAVE A WHITE FILM all over my glasses, bowls, dishes, EVERYTHING.

What is going on with Cascade?

We do not have hard water here, it is not mineral buildup!

That is interesting because I had been using Sam's detergent and I was getting the white film on my dishes. As soon as I used it all up I was going to change to something else. In the mean time I have been putting some vinegar in the dishwasher before I start it and it has helped.

I'm glad I read this thread. I've had the same problem. I've used Cascade for years and always loved it. My dishwasher is new. I've noticed that the Cascade doesn't seem to dissolve. Much of the soap is still left in the filling container. And yes, film on the dishes, and even pieces of the soap. Sometimes I give the dishes a second rinse. I didn't know they changed their formula. Time for something new. Also, I do not believe you should have to use two or three products to get clean dishes.

Email or write to Cascade and notify customer service.............they do appreciate hearing from customers, and they will change the formula if people complain enough.

I thought I was going nuts!

The Cascade complete Tabs w/Blue gunk in them has always done a good job. Even now they are letting me down. My cobalt blue coffee mugs have white puddles in the upside down bottoms. UGH!! I even tried adding vinegar to the rinse cycle. Not much help.

Oh well, it's go to go green. But my dishes will be white.

ALL dishwasher detergents containing phosphates were removed from the shelves in June.

The "new" formula had started to creep on to the shelves before then.

There is an older thread on the Kitchen and Dining Board (or whatever they call it now).

If Cascade still works for you you either have a very valuable antique box of the old formula, or you have very soft water.

What I do now:

1) I use Cascade Complete, alone it is only very slightly better than the old Cascade, but none of the others are worth s quat, none of the tablet types ever even dissolve in my water

2)I use LemiShine in the closed cup (second wash) about 1/3 LemiShine to 2/3 Cascade Complete

4)Jet Dry in the dispenser don't let it run out !!

5)extra hot water setting and Pots and Pans cycle every wash

6)about a teaspoon of Lemonade KoolAid (unsweetened, actually I use the WalMart generic) in the cup with the LemiShine and Cascade Complete (second wash, closed cup)

7) I have always added a splash of bleach to the bottom of the dishwasher before starting it, I started this in the seventies when I had an awful dishwasher and it is required by law in most states for restaurants (sanitation)

NOBODY should have to do this to get clean dishes out of a 2 year old top of the line dishwasher.

The whole of America could write, call or email. It won't help, this was done to comply with national law. The law itself is decades old, phosphates have been systematically removed from everythng else, dishwasher soap came last, maybe becasue they cannot make one that works withoug phosphates.

I add 1/2 cup of calgon. Put it in the bottom of the dishwasher. It helps since I have very hard water. Still not great.
