It's Leap Day! What are We Doing with the Extra Time?

Started 1330382655.153 in Kitchen & Food Talk, Hosts & Personalities | Last reply 1331007515.27 by SEWNANA
Hello, foodies…

I've been doing a lot of calendar double-takes this month. No, February does not end on Tuesday. We've got another day this week because it's a Leap Year…and Leap Year falls on a Wednesday! That means I'll be joining you for our fifth In the Kitchen with David – PM Edition of the month. And, what's our theme for the week? Making most of our extra time, of course!

Good news! All of the cookbook chapters are now full. I say “now,” because it was obvious when we sat down together last week, that we had some work to do on finding a balance. How so? Well, this may surprise you, but I LOVE dessert. So when I started writing down the number of dessert recipes I wanted to include…I landed on 32. Unfortunately, the rest of the chapters were not quite as robust. So, we scaled the dessert-chapter down just a bit and beefed up the rest. The result, I feel, is an incredibly curated collection of the best comfort food dishes out there. Taste testing begins this week…let’s hope they all taste as good as they look!

Ready for your blog question? If you had an extra day every month, what would you do with it? Do more make-ahead-type cooking? Spend more time with your family? Exercise a bit more? Hit "New Reply" and share your thoughts. I'll see you on Wednesday. I hope your tastebuds are ready for my delicious Marinara Sauce! See you at 9pm ET.

Keep it flavorful!
—David

P.S. Have you entered for the Taste New York Sweepstakes on my Facebook page? Be sure to enter…you don't want to miss out on a weekend in New York City and attending FOOD & WINE's Best New Chefs party! Speaking of FOOD & WINE, there's someone I want you to meet: Chef Bruce Sherman. I met Chef Sherman at the FOOD & WINE Entertaining Showcase in Chicago. He's a big fan of trying new things and using fresh ingredients to make food from scratch...like homemade Marinara Sauce!

Hi David,

That's a good question you asked, and here's my answer. I never seem to have time to read a book anymore. I cook and bake, take care of house and shopping, knit and do needlepoint, but I never, never have time to just sit and read. So that's what I would do from morning until night on that one extra day per month. Reading is so enjoyable and we can learn so much from books, so dedicating a day for reading is a great idea for me.

See you Wednesday night....{#emotions_dlg.wub}

Catch up on sleep?!?! Seriously, how is it an extra day? Kids still have school, businesses are still open and expect employees to report! It isn't like we all of a sudden have a 3 day weekend with a normal 5 day week. {#emotions_dlg.confused1}

Well, if I truly had an extra day each month with minimal or no obligations I would take a class both in something I am interested in and something that I would like to learn more about.

I started this last year as part of my New Year's resolution but only made it unitl March. I really love tea and in January I took a 4 hour class at my local tea shop.It included tea identification, characteristics, flavor profiles and tasting. It was a blast.

February I signed up for a free course on how to fix my mountain bike. It was very informative and I feel much more knowledgeable about my bike and it's workings. That's saying a lot for me. :)

In March I had planned to take a course on how to ride a motorcycle but I chickened out at the last minute and didn't plan anything in its place.

Thank you for making me think about this. Now is as good as time as any to pick up where I left off.

Hello, Mr.V! Great 5 hour Fest Sunday & Happy Leap Day! (Sharp New Graphics too!) As for extra time? I want to cook & bake, sort out my recipes & address book(disasters!) but most of all: spend as much time with my Husband. Mr.Ed works crazy Retail Hours so the most is the best! Being Italian, we call it Gravy as my Gram did & my Aunt still does. No matter, it's always tasty! Have a terrific show!!!

Hi David!!!{#emotions_dlg.tt1}{#emotions_dlg.tt1}

I really enjoyed your 5 hour show!! And Jill is the perfect co-host!!

As for Leap day....well, I am not pressed for time in my life, but I endeavor to live each day to the fullest. Who knows, it could be the last!!!

Let me start out with "Once upon a time....". I would like to do the things that I never seem to get around to like getting my recipes in order. I am embarrassed by what a mess they are. It would be MY day and I wouldn't have to deal with all the other things that HAVE to get done first. Then when I had that finished I would move on to another thing I always seem to never have time to get too -- like maybe organizing the millions of pictures that I have. I am planning on retiring this year and hopefully will be able to get to the "things I want to do when I have the time." Really enjoyed your show on Sunday but then I always do.

Hi Davld,

If I had an extra day every month, it would help me to be able to clean out my house and throw/give away things I didn't need anymore

Love the promo on Fox News channel regarding your Wednesday and Sunday shows.

I LOVED YOUR SHOW WITH JILL ON SUNDAY. HAD NOT PLANNED ON WATCHING ALL 5 HOURS, BUT WHEN I FOUND OUT JILL WAS GOING TO BE CO-HOSTING I ENDED UP WATCHING THE WHOLE SHOW!! I remember her being on KOMU-TV at the University of Missouri-Columbia!!

I WISH THAT YOU AND JILL WOULD DO A SHOW TOGETHER AROUND CHRISTMAS TIME. WITH ALL OF THE TIPS AND IDEAS YOU BOTH HAVE IT WOULD BE GREAT!!

Have a good Leap Day!!

Hi David,

Happy Leap Day and loved your 5 hour show on Sunday, I could watch you all day:) Loved that Jill was included in on your show, you and her are for sure my favorite hosts on QVC. I agree with the post above mine that you and Jill should do a show together at Christmas time, that would be fun to watch. Keep it in mind:)

To answer your question this week: If I had more time and an extra day each month I would spend more me time, sleeping, watching more QVC, shopping at the mall and spending more time with my mom.

Have a great show tomorrow-Suzanne{#emotions_dlg.wub}

{#emotions_dlg.thumbup} Hey David,

If I had an extra day every month I would try to organize the THOUSANDS of recipes I have cut out of magazines and newspapers over the past years. I want to get them all put in binders. I have small boxes all categorized and really need to get to it. When I go looking for a recipe I have too many boxes to go through. I want to ask you David why Lidia Bastianichs' Italy In America cookbook is no longer available on the Q. I really want that book and everyone knows that the Q has the best prices. Could you please bring it back? Thank you. Love Ya and keep up the great work you do. I have learned so much fromn watching your shows.

Hi there David!! As far as my extra day this month goes, my kiddo let me sleep in until 8am and we have been watching movies all day so far making the most out of this rainy day here in SW PA. We ate pancakes for breakfast/lunch and have just been relaxing. In a bit I'm going to get in an extra workout since I'm working to lose a good bit of weight. If we had an extra day each month, I would do much the same thing. Try not to take it so seriously and use those days that we always get to do the things that need to be done. I hope you're enjoying your extra day and I can't wait to spend some time in the kitchen with you.

Sounds like the cookbook is coming along great! Enjoy the taste testing process...you and your cookbook crew will be hard at work to get everything done so that will be the most fun. See you tonight! :)

If I had one more day a month, I would like to have a family dinner and have all my children, grandchildren and significant others come over. The only day that my husband and I have off work together is Sunday so it is difficult to schedule a family event on Sunday since he and I enjoy those days for ourselves. Please work your magic (press the easy button) and make our dreams come true!

{#emotions_dlg.rolleyes} Hello, Savid! Loved your 5 hour show and that you had Jill with you. It was great. Your question really made me think. so, if I had an extra day every month, I would get more organized in every room in my home and purge a lot of things. those things would be donated to our local women's shelter (my charity of choice) and I would spend more time with my family. just quiet stay at home time for all of us to catch up and spend quality time together for no reason at all except that we love each other very much. Always look forward to your shows and can find great deals with you. I have always loved to cook but you have helped me put together a wonderful kitchen with all the great things that help make cooking easier on all of us. I thank you for that. have a great time on the next show and I will be watching as always.{#emotions_dlg.wub}

In truth, I'd probably waste it watching TV and taking naps, but just to dream: dedicate the day to either scrapbooking or systematically clean the storage spaces. Once those were finally done, I would use it as a social day and have company for dinner, taking all day to plan and prep and enjoy the results.

I too enjoyed the Sunday show, which I got to watch most of since Nascar race was rained out. Phone was too close and bought some stuff too! You just tempt me too much!

Hi David !! An extra day HUH?? Very Easy to answer, I would spend the day making cook ahead meals for the Freezer. Different soups Especially.

I would also like to share some time reading thru the 2000 cookbooks I have aquired...being a Collector, I like to *Eat my Way* thru the books & mentally make notes for recipes I have found and have a Free day to cook.

If life was so simple...a Free Day each month would be FANTASTIC...Reality is...just every four years....Happy Leaping...Looking forward to tonights show.

SYL :)

Like today, I would try a new food on my extra day - and I mean something that I have NEVER had before either from a restaurant or homemade. Today I fixed swai - a fish I had never tried before, but that will certainly stay on my shopping list.

Hi David,

I would use the extra day as my volunteer/making a difference day.

With one extra day a month and since my dad passed away on Leap Day 16 years ago, I would volunteer an extra day a month at our state VA center.

Hello David, I actually took the day off. Spending time reading, and taking care of things that I never seem to get done. Also watching ITKWD as I am writing this blog. We had about 7-8" of heavy snow, not really enjoying that, but always enjoy watching you on Wednesday and Sunday. :D
