NY Fashion Week was truly extraordinary. And what were the big surprises?
My friend Carolina Herrera presented a wonderful collection that was as elegant and edgy as she is—full of beautiful color, print pairing, and fluid fabrics that make women look beautiful. I loved it! Then, Diane Von Furstenberg presented her “Rendezvous” collection. As one fashion editor said, it was "sophisticated, simple, and smoldering.” Diane understands a woman’s body, and her clothes and beautiful use of color and print reflect that. As president of the CFDA, Diane has proven to be an authentic leader. With this collection, she has solidified her rightful place as an iconic American designer.
Color made a big runway statement. The secret-weapon color was a warm, dusty navy. It’s the new black of spring 2012. This new navy is followed closely by a complete spectrum of plums and magentas.
There are always a number of related events surrounding NY Fashion Week. The CFDA opened IMPACT, a new exhibition at FIT (the Fashion Institute of Technology). IMPACT showcases the impact that American designers have had on how we dress. As a long-time member and past president of the CFDA, I’m honored to have my uniform designs highlighted as part of this important exhibit. If you’re in New York, be sure to visit it. It runs through April.
And, speaking of uniforms, Alina Cho interviewed me on CNN this week. She said that with all the uniforms I’ve designed throughout the years, I’ve covered more bodies than any other designer. Very nice for my ego! Let me know if you’ve ever worn one of my designs to work. I’d love to hear your story!
Lastly, on Thursday evening, I attended a screening of The Tents, a new documentary about the development and evolution of the Fashion Week tents from their location in Bryant Park to what they've become today at the Lincoln Center. As I’m often called “father of the tents,” my role in the film and story is significant. I understand it ran on channel 13 in NY, a PBS station, so perhaps you can catch it there.
Now, for a restful weekend at the beach. See you on the Q next Saturday, 2/25 at 5am ET. Grab some strong coffee or tea and we’ll start the day together in style.
