PanImage 7" Touchscreen Google Android WiFi Multimedia

Posted by Expert Answers 1290545844

Following are some key questions about our Today’s Special Value.

Answers provided by PanImage

Q: Is it Mac compatible?

A: Utilizing a microSD card and reader, you can use any computer to share compatible file formats with the Media Tablet.

Q: Which files formats does it recognize?

A: Your Media Tablet will recognize these file types:

  • Photo: JPG, JPEG, BMP, and PNG
  • Audio: MP3
  • Video: H263, MPEG4, and 3GP. It supports 320x240 resolutions and less than or equal to 512KBPS streaming videos.

It is possible for other file types to be recognized through the loading of applications.

Q: How long will it last on a single charge?

A: In WiFi-off mode, it will last up to 4 - 6 hours of continuous use depending on the backlight setting and storage use.  You can extend use times by going into settings and dimming your LCD backlight.

Q: How many books can you store in it?

A: This is hard to say as the book files vary tremendously based on type and content. If you assumed each book was 350KB, then you’d be able to hold over 3,000 titles if the majority of your internal memory was used for books.

You can also swap-out SD memory cards for limitless storage of all of your media.

Q: Can I use this as an eReader?

A: Yes. You can download a number of eReader apps from the home-screen app store.

Q: Can this be used with Broadband wireless internet?

A: You can access the Internet via WiFi at home or through a hotspot, or by an Ethernet (wired) connection with the included adapter. If you are asking if you can connect via broadband wireless from your mobile/cellular provider through a USB device, this function is not supported.

When connecting to public hotspots, follow the user manual's instructions for making the connection and then open up your web browser. Often these connections require you to select or agree to terms on a webpage before it will allow full access.

Q: Do I have to pay for Internet access on the PanImage Touchscreen? Do I have to be wireless to access?

A: There are no additional charges or fees with the tablet. You can access the Internet via WiFi at home or through a hotspot, or by an Ethernet (wired) connection with the included adapter.

When connecting to these public Hotspots, follow the user manual's instructions for making the connection and then open up your web browser. Often these connections require you to select or agree to terms on a webpage before it will allow full access.

Q: Can I use iTunes with this item?

A [REVISED]: Once you’ve installed the third-party application (AndroidTM APK file), you should have the ability to listen and sync playlists to your iTunes account. (Websearch iTunes Android 1.6).

Q: Am I able to watch YouTube videos with this?

A: Yes.

Q: Can I view my own photos that I have on an SD card I use with the Android™ phone? Will those photos come up like an album?

A: You can view your own photos using a microSD (MS) memory card.

Q: If I have high-speed internet, do I still need a router to connect to the Internet?

A: If you want to access the Internet via a wired connection with the included Ethernet adapter, no you do not need a router. If you wish to access via WiFi, you will need a WiFi router.

Q: Please explain how this works as an eReader.

A: Simply download one of many eReader apps through the app store. All have similar functions, but are unique to the provider. One popular one is the FBReaderJ.

Q: Do I have to pay a monthly service fee?

A: No.

Q:  We have Internet at my office. Does this mean I can use this item there?

A: Yes. You can access the Internet via WiFi (if your office has a wireless router) or by an Ethernet (wired) connection with the included adapter.

Q: Can I send an email from this device?

A: Yes.

Q: Can I play music on this?

A: Yes. You can access MP3 music files through the included music player app.

Q: Can I play games from different sites on this?

A: You can play “non-flash” games and many games can be downloaded from the app store.

Q: What is the biggest SD card I can use with this?

A: 32GB microSD card.

Q: Is there a slot/holder for the stylus on the pad itself?

A: No.

Q: Can I download movies?

A: Yes, the tablet recognizes these video file types: MP4+ACC, 3GP, FLV up to QVGA (320 x 240).

Q:  Can I use it as an alarm clock?

A: Yes.

Q:  Is there a cover or case available for this product?

A: Yes, the case is sold separately.

Q:  Can I use Skype on this?

A [REVISED]: There are many third-party applications (AndroidTM APK files) which claim to support Skype on Android 1.6. These can certainly be tried. Given the processing power required for processing audio, video, WiFi, and the application all simultaneously, we are reluctant to advocate the use of this application as the performance may not be acceptable

Q:  I have a wireless N router in my home. Will I be able to connect to the Internet with it?

A: Yes.

Q:  Can an app be deleted once it’s downloaded?

A: Yes.

Q: Can I download books?

A: Yes.

Q: Can I adjust the size of the text when I use this as an eReader?

A: Yes, depending on which eReader app you use.

Q: Can this be used in Europe? Ireland? England? As long as WiFi is available? Do I need a different charger with converter or merely a plug converter?

A: Yes. You just need a plug converter.

Q: Can I watch movies on it?

A: Yes, in MPEG4 format.

Q: Do I have to pay for the apps?

A: Many apps are free, but there are some apps that require a fee.

Q:  Is this made by or associated with PanDigital?

A:  Yes. This is PanImage, made by PanDigital Inc.

Q: Can I download apps from iTunes?

A: No, this is not supported.

Q: Is this Bluetooth compatible?

A: No.

Q: What games are included in it?

A: There are no games preloaded on the tablet. However, there are hundreds available via the preloaded App Market portal and widely available on the web (simply look for APK file download sites).

Q: Is this Java Capable?

A: Not as loaded. While AndroidTM applications are written in Java, there's no Java Virtual Machine in the platform and Java byte code is not executed. Java classes get recompiled into Dalvik executable and run on Dalvik virtual machine. Dalvik is a specialized virtual machine designed specifically for AndroidTM and optimized for battery-powered mobile devices with limited memory and CPU. J2ME support can be provided via third-party application such as the J2ME MIDP Runner  (http://www.netmite.com/android/ ).

Q: Will the Android™ operating system be upgraded to the latest version?

A: No. As is often the case, the software was developed to optimize this hardware set and there are currently no plans to redevelop the core software (kernel) to a new operating system (OS).

Q: Will this work with a USB keyboard and/or mouse?

A: Yes. Although compatibility with every device can’t be guaranteed and certain keys may not function properly, the tablet works with an external keyboard and mouse. This connection requires the use of the external transfer box.

Q: Can I do reports and download books to this device?

A: Certainly, once you find and download the appropriate AndroidTM APK file applications. For reports, you’d want to look for applications for taking notes and writing basic documents (utilizing the virtual keyboard). For books, you will have to first look for a book reader application that supports the book file type you are downloading (most popular being EPUB).

Q: What version of Android™ is on this?

A: The tablet utilizes AndroidTM 1.6.

Q: Are there parental controls for this tablet?

A: There is the ability to set a device lock code to prevent someone from using the device without your permission. However, once unlocked, there are no further ways to restrict specific access (to websites, loaded content).

Q: Is this compatible with documents created on Word or Adobe Reader when downloaded from a flash drive?

A: There are two parts to this answer. The first is File Compatibility:

Word: Once you download a third-party APK application (Documents To Go is a popular one among many) you can read (and sometimes edit) DOC files.

Adobe PDF: Once you download a third-party APK application, you can read Adobe PDF files.

The second part of the answer is in regards to Flash Drive Compatibility:

USB Flash Drive Capability: Utilizing the external transfer box, the Tablet will support many USB Flash drives. Compatibility with all external devices cannot be guaranteed.

Q: Can I scan documents into this tablet and then use it as a reader?

Once again, there are two parts here which I need to separate: Scanning and Reading.

Scanning: There isn’t a way to scan directly into the Tablet.

Reading: Once a document has been saved in a compatible file type or in a file type supported by an AndroidTM App (APK file) you’ve installed, you’ll be able to read the file. You can use the microSD memory card, USB Flash Drive, email download, or connection to your PC via USB to transfer the file that you scanned.

Q: How much does this weigh?

A: This Panimage Media Tablet model weighs approximately 12.3 ounces.

Q: Can this be hooked up to a TV?

A: No, there is not an external display output on this tablet.

Q: Can I use the PanImage Media Tablet to read PDF files?

A: Once you download and install a third-party APK (AndroidTM file) Reader application which supports PDF files, you can read Adobe PDF files.

Q: Can I view email attachments with this?

A: You can view email attachments which are file types supported by the device. It may be necessary for you to locate a third-party reader application (AndroidTM APK file) to install onto your Panimage Media Tablet in order to view certain file types.

Q: Can I listen to XM, SIRIUS on this device?

A [REVISED]: Although the Sirius XM application does load on this tablet, due to the performance of the streaming audio, we cannot endorse this use at this time.

The TSV has the 1.6 operating system which appears to be at least five versions behind the curret OS available (newer versions: 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.1, 2.2 and now 2.3). What are the differences between 1.6 and the most recent version, 2.3?

I ordered this today but I'm canceling my order after reading the FAQ. This device doesn't come close to the iPad so if you are giving this to someone who wants and iPad, don't. They will be disappointed.

First, the OS is several versions behind the current version. The way I understand it, the hardware manufacturer has to tweak Android for its device. So, you'd have to wait for PanImage to upgrade. Someone correct me if that's wrong.

Device is only 2GB. That will fill fast once you start adding apps. Don't know if you can run apps off the SD card. I am guessing no.

No Bluetooth, No Flash (iPad doesn't do flash but Android hardware should!!)

Can't use Netflix, Hulu, or Skype.

Everyone should read the FAQ and then decide. Do a little research.

Unfortunately, the Android operating system is currently fragmented, simply meaning, there are many versions out there. 1.6 is one of the oldest and is way outdated. 2.3 (Gingerbread) is soon to be out. Currently, 2.2 (FroYo) is out and is much better than 1.6 including longer battery life. Android was mostly thought of for phones and Google is still saying it is not properly optimized for tablets. This means manufacturers of tablets are "shoehorning" Android in the tablets. Also, this tablet does NOT have access to the official Android Market, which has over 100,000 apps. The App store on this tab is far more limited. Take it from this tech geek, this is a great basic device for going online and reading email. It is not, however, a competitor to the Apple iPad or the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which is the only Android tablet recognized to take advantage of the full Android experience. Shop with caution.
