Taste the Rainbow! Kick up your Kitchen with Pops of Color and Flavor

by on ‎05-28-2014 06:10 PM

You’ve heard me say plenty of times that we eat with our eyes first. But when it comes to my kitchen, I love to cook with my eyes, too!

That often means letting my eyes guide me to the most vibrant seasonal fruits and vegetables. There are times I’ve built a whole meal around that gorgeous soft green of new lettuce or the juicy red of a sun-ripened tomato straight from the garden.

But it also means surrounding myself with color in my kitchen. Because, ever since I was a little girl diving into a new 64-pack of crayons…color is what makes me happy. And I find food tastes best when the cook is happy. {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

Take one look at temp-tations and you can tell I’m all about color…and choices! Most days, I’m an Old World Confetti girl, but some days and dishes just call out for the elegance of Floral Lace.

It’s hard to believe temp-tations started out with just Old World Green…we’ve come a long way, thanks to all of you!

And that’s what’s go me so excited about the upcoming Cooking on Q: Color Your Kitchen event on Wednesday, June 4. It’s like someone handed me a brand new big box of crayons and said, “Go crazy!” So I have, with all my color-crazy temp-tationistas and temp-tationisters in mind.

Finally, here’s one of my very favorite ways to add color to your kitchen…with a recipe that plays up the most colorful and flavorful seasonal ingredients. Try this vibrant new take on classic summer coleslaw at your next BBQ or picnic. It may not have all 64 colors, but it’s a feast for the eyes…and delicious, too!

Colorful Grilled Corn Coleslaw

Coleslaw

Ingredients:

3 ears fresh corn

2 carrots

½ cup medium red bell pepper, sliced thin

½ cup medium yellow bell pepper, sliced thin

3 cups purple cabbage, shredded

3 cups green cabbage, shredded

¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped

¼ cup vegetable oil

¼ cup rice wine vinegar

¼ cup lime juice

1 teaspoon lime zest

3 Tablespoons honey

1 Tablespoon minced garlic

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Peel corn and remove silks.  Grill on gas stove top or outdoor grill over a medium flame until black char marks cover the ears evenly.  Remove from heat and allow to cool.  Cut kernels off cobs and place in your 2.5 quart temp-tations® bowl.

  2. Julienne carrots and add to bowl along with peppers, cabbage and cilantro. Mix well and set aside.

  3. In a small bowl whisk together the oil, vinegar, lime juice, zest and honey until smooth.

  4. Pour over slaw and toss to combine.  Add salt and pepper to taste.
