High/Low Hemlines: The Trend Behind Summer's New ""It"" Dress

by on ‎06-13-2012 05:44 PM

One afternoon in Vicenza, when I should've been sleeping but couldn't, I decided to do a little "market research," (a.k.a. window shopping). {#emotions_dlg.biggrin} And one of the trends I noticed is very strong this summer—in Italy as well as here—is the high/low hemline. It's an interesting take on a summer dress. By simply making the hem shorter in the front, it gives the dress a fresh look, and makes it, in many cases, even more wearable.

Color Story

Look familiar? We debuted that dress by gf by Geren Ford (the Sleeveless High-Low Maxi (A222558)) a few months ago on The Lisa Robertson Show, and I think it's one of the best I've seen. Geren's hemline, and the high/low hemline in general, can be flattering on virtually everyone regardless of your height. If you're more petite, it will not "drag you down," and if you're tall, you don't have that embarrassing "naked ankle" thing going on. You can also wear it with a wedge heel or a number of flats—even a flip-flop—so you can decide how dressy or casual you want to look. This particular dress also comes in beautiful solid colors, which are extremely flattering. And, it even has strategic tiering at the waist and thigh to give the illusion of a long legged, lean look.

Don’t be afraid of this hemline or any garment with asymmetrical lines…it's an easy way to enjoy something new. But be sure to give your legs and feet some extra love, because they'll be seen! You might want to start with a little self-tanner like Bare Escentuals Faux Tan Self-Tanner (A56099) then pretty up those toes with some polish from Sephora (A219991). If you put some "T.I.P.S." (A107349) on your cuticles, you'll have a really finished look. {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

One last thought: A nude or neutral shoe will make your legs look even longer and keep your look simple if you're going with some statement jewelry.

Geren’s dress is back in stock and available for you once again this Friday. I’ll see you on Monday for PM Style with Chaz Dean! And don't forget, Gabrielle always gives you a preview of everything to come in her blog.

See you soon.
