Week 9 Surprises

by on ‎11-09-2010 01:14 PM

It’s hard to find the right words to describe this season as we head into week 9.  My attempts have included “surprising”, “un-conventional”, “shocking” and always “exciting!”

When you look at the headlines this week you read that Randy Moss is a member of his third team in a month.  I’m still not sure we have heard the real reason why Brad Childress let him go but they are jumping up and down in Nashville.

The NFL is doing it’s best to crack down on violent hits and is handing out some pretty steep fines.  Mike Shanahan benched Donovan McNabb for Rex Grossman in last Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions before the game was completely out of reach for the Redskins.  First he said it was because Grossman was better at running the 2-minute drill then he said it had to do with Donovan’s conditioning?  Hmmm.....something doesn’t add up in our nation’s capital (similar to our budget.)

Week after week, upset after upset we are slowly beginning to see this year’s NFL Elite emerge.  The New England Patriots at 6-1 are atop this week’s power rankings.  Several teams with 5-2 records follow like the Pittsburgh Steelers, the New York Giants and the Indianapolis Colts.  I would say to also keep an eye on the Baltimore Ravens and the suddenly- awakened New Orleans Saints.

A key match up to keep your eyes on this week will be the AFC West division leading Kansas City Chiefs against the surging Oakland Raiders.  The raiders are running the energized legs of Darren McFadden who is averaging a league- leading 133 rushing yards per game.
