Strawberry-Nutella Whoopie Pies...Now That's a Sweet Sandwich!

by on ‎04-20-2015 06:22 PM

Hello, foodies…

I don’t know if you’ve ever been to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but it’s a quaint little town near the center of the state with a large Amish and Mennonite population. And, it’s the birthplace of one of the best desserts on the planet: the whoopie pie. I didn’t have a whoopie pie until I came to Altoona, PA as an anchor at WTAJ-TV. (Altoona is about 2 hours west of Lancaster, but the dessert is popular in pockets all over the state.) Whoopie pies look like giant Oreo cookies…chocolate cookies and a creamy filling. But, the cookies are soft and cake-like and the filling in the middle (if it’s a good recipe) is like a fluffy, sweet cloud.

When we were brainstorming recipes for “Sandwich Month,” we wanted one more sweet sandwich, to accompany our chocolate, peanut butter, and banana. ITKWD team member Amy, a fellow central PA’er, suggested whoopie pies. Foodies, we give you Wednesday’s recipe, Strawberry-Nutella Whoopie Pies.

Wes, our genius photographer, found some more pictures from North Carolina on his camera today. And, I thought I’d share them with all of you:

Mama Dip and David

Here’s my favorite shot of me and Mama Dip. Just love her. Jonathan is taking our photo, and Wes captured it all on another camera.

Eddie & David

This is me and Eddie Williams, the owner of Time Out, my other favorite restaurant in Chapel Hill. Eddie’s been the owner since the restaurant opened in 1978.

The famous chicken biscuit

This is the famous chicken biscuit that made the restaurant famous. I may or may not have eaten a 100 of those in my lifetime.

Cinnamon Rolls

And these are the Cinnamon Rolls at Time Out. Instead of taking the biscuit scraps and re-rolling them (which would make them tough), they take the scraps and make homemade cinnamon rolls. You couldn’t go to Time Out for a chicken biscuit and NOT get a cinnamon roll.

David Dressed Up!

As most of you know, I hosted the Clef Hangers spring concert on Saturday evening and that’s why I was all dolled up. The concert was amazing. It was just an incredible honor to be able to MC the program and introduce the group for their concert and I was suddenly 20 years old again, when I was up there on the stage. It didn’t seem so long ago. It was wonderful to see how excited the guys were about what they were doing and the whole auditorium had a wonderful energy.

Earlier in the day on Saturday, there was a Clef Hanger alumni gathering and the current group gave us a preview of two songs they were singing that night. And then, what was really special was, all the alumni introduced ourselves, and said when we went to school, and it was emotional—there’s a brotherhood that never diminishes no matter how long ago you sang. Then we circled up at the end and sang the alma mater. It was fun.

I’ll see you this Wednesday, foodies, for In the Kitchen with David at 8pm ET.

Keep it flavorful!
