Here's to More GHD's! (Good Hair Days)

Hi PM Stylers…this week, let’s talk hair. Isn’t it a bear? Wouldn’t it be great if you could freeze in time your best haircut ever, never to regrow again, so you always had the 'do' you loved?

I’ve always wanted to grow my hair out, and every time I do it just doesn’t look right. I have many moments in my early days on QVC attempting to grow it, work it, rock it, and then later ..... I look back at photos only to cringe and realize what a miss it was.

It’s a bummer trying to be something, that you just are not. Smiley Happy Thought it would be fun to walk down memory lane. Let’s start with the early days of Shawn…this is me at 6 or 7, channeling Dorothy Hamill...

Then there were the teen years when I lived in Mexico City, where everything is bigger, larger than life, expressive, bc of the Latin influence (and the 1980’s thing). There’s a lot of hairspray and teasing here, and I was addicted to hair accessories like banana clips and bows.

Prom hair is always a good laugh so this is 1991…

After college I moved to NYC with my BFF Laurie who worked in Fashion. I worked as a Page for CBS making $8/hour. There was no money for fancy haircuts so this is the best I could manage…

After, I was on NBC’s The Apprentice Martha Stewart, I grew my hair out in a style that is my most favorite to date. This is one I should have frozen in time bc I’ve always loved it and never been able to get back to it…

Shortly after coming to QVC I tried the whole grow out thing. I would say this is my version of helmet head, with hair…

Special occasion hair has been interesting bc trying to fake an updo, when you have short hair and nothing to “put up", means first, back combing and attacking my hair with a comb to make it look like there is more than there is. Niece Sloane’s face says it all.

My absolute best hair buddy is my angel friend Maria from Calista Tools. She’s put me in rollers, and done this cool braid thing in my bangs one day for a QVC beauty event, I loved that one…

By the way, if you ever want a killer wig, the angled cut wig By HairDo from QVC is awesome. Check it out here and here’s me in it…

Hair has been an emotional journey for me too. I have had Alopecia twice in my life. Once in HS in my bangs, once while at QVC, on the side of my head. Mally once shared with me that she too has suffered from severe Alopecia. For me, acupuncture worked. But it is a devastating thing losing your hair for no apparent reason, with no control over it. All along, my hairdressers have been my angels. I prize great hair products and tools bc you must treat your hair with respect and care.

My favorite blow dryer that I recommend to everyone is a pick out of Italy called Parlux. I own the 3200 model. I have two and they have lasted me over 10years so the price tag was worth it. There is also an amazing new dryer on Q by GhD. I just gave it to my friend Laurie in Michigan for her Bday. And Chaz will be on Monday night's PM Style, so it’s kind of perfect to talk about hair. I live for his styling creme and I use his Cleansing Conditioner (love the Seasonals) although don’t tell him sometimes I fall off the wagon and let a little lather creep into my routine. Old habits die hard. One thing I have never forsaken is my Blonde. I think I was meant to be a blonde, God was just on holiday that day and no one gave him the memo. So every 4-8wks it's in the chair I go for foils. And the journey too has sometimes been flawed. I am sure you remember some of my blonder days when my hair nearly looked crayon yellow. I think I’ve hit my stride now though, finding the right balance. Had my highlights done just this week.

In my next life I am going to come back with long gorgeous, “air dry”, dirty blonde, perfect, Pantene-commercial hair. (And I’ll also be European. I figure why not dream big.)

What’s your hair hope????

Shawn x
