In Style Now: Peasant Tops

by on ‎06-27-2012 05:26 PM

When you think about a peasant top, most people think, "Oh yeah, those started back in the '60s with the bohemian thing." If you're an ardent fashion history student, you might automatically think Yves Saint Laurent. But peasant tops actually go back to...real peasants! {#emotions_dlg.biggrin} All the way back to medieval times, in fact, when the average person needed something functional and durable. Most "real" people worked hard and had a large amount of manual labor in their everyday lives. They didn't have a walk-in closet full of options on what to wear that day, they had, in a lot of cases, one blouse.

As time passed, it makes sense that the basic top would evolve. If you were a little better off, you could afford a finer fabric. If you were skilled, you could add embroidery, etc. But over the centuries, the "peasant top" has never disappeared from fashion. It's always a top that women gravitate to, as it's very forgiving (you gain a few, you lose a few, the blouse still fits), it's ageless, it covers the right things, and it always seems to be in style. {#emotions_dlg.biggrin} These days, ironically, you can pay a "king's ransom" for a designer peasant top!

There is, of course, a reason I'm rambling on about it now. And it’s because the peasant top, in its newest incarnation of sheer fabric, is once again, one of fashion’s biggest trends. Last season on The Lisa Robertson Show, we brought you a great blouse from the Kris Jenner Kollection (A222813), which shows how versatile and fashionable the peasant top is when you mix the sheer fabric with other trends like ruffles. Kris’ top is once again available this Friday, as featured in our “She’s Got It” and “Sheer Genius” looks. Enjoy. {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}
