An Early Morning Walk with Cole

I wrote a blog about my grandson Cole at Christmastime.  Many of you have asked me to write more about him so here is a little story about an early morning walk we took together earlier this week.

My daughter, Kirstyn, came into my room with Cole about 6:15a.m. the other day.  Since I work on a lot of evenings on the air at QVC, I was sound asleep at that early hour.  Kirstyn drops Cole off at our house the mornings that she works as a nurse at a local hospital.   My wife, Beth, who is a wonderful grandma watches him to help out Kirstyn and Jeff.  The reason that she was waking me is there was a big black spider on our kitchen floor trapped under a glass that Beth had placed on top of it.  All of the women in my life have a fear of spiders but none worse than Kirstyn.  After stumbling out of bed and into the kitchen I quickly removed the spider from our premises.  That was easy.  It was not easy to fall back asleep after this rousing start to my day.

As I was enjoying my cup of coffee Beth suggested that she and I take a walk with Cole and our Bichon, Sadie.  Since the weather was perfect and I didn’t have to be into QVC until 11:30a.m. I thought this was an excellent idea.   So off we went with little Cole Daniel and Sadie. The sun was shining and the temperature was a perfect sixty-eight degrees.  But even better than the weather was being with Cole and experiencing the joy that a nineteen- month- old little boy experiences on an early morning walk in late April.  When a school bus came down our street he waved enthusiastically and shouted, “Hi!......Hi!.......Hi!”  The bus driver and most of the kids on the bus waved back.  A helicopter flew overhead and he was in total amazement as he watched it disappear into the distant sky.  As we approached a neighbor’s tulips he said,  “ooooohhhhhh!” and stopped and smelled them and gently touched the pedals.  When we finally arrived at our neighbor’s pond he was “mesmerized” by all the fish and laughed with sheer delight.

When we arrived back home about an hour later I was actually thankful that Kirstyn had woke me up.  If she hadn’t, I would have missed a magical walk with little Cole.  I LOVE being a grandpa.  I think as a grandparent I realize even more how fast time goes by and how important the little things in life are.  To Cole the little things are the big things.  To Cole everything is a miracle.  Cole has all the time in the world and so I have decided to slow my life down and spend some of that precious time with him.  I know that it won’t be long and he’ll be busy with school and his friends.  But right now, he loves spending time with me and I am going to spend every minute with him that I can while he is young.  I love to teach him things but you know what?  I’m learning from him how truly miraculous life is.  And one of the best ways to experience it is to simply take a walk.
