January in Ireland - New Year Traditions

Happy New Year! I hope that you had a nice Christmas vacation!

January has been incredibly mild here in Ireland, and so far we have seen no snow nor has the temperature dropped below freezing.

In my garden, the snowdrops have already come out, and the early primroses are already in bloom. I do hope we don’t get a cold snap!!

January 6th, the feast of the Epiphany, is known in the Irish language as ‘Nollaig na mBan’ - Women's little Christmas, where tradition has it that the women of the household have a day off work, and the men stay home to handle the household. It was a common custom for children to buy their mothers and grandmothers a small gift, but, in more recent times, this has been overtaken by Mother's day.

I think this is a lovely tradition and, because the women are the backbone of all the Christmas festivities, gives recognition for all their hard work. So, I did my bit and cooked dinner AND did the wash up too!

Have you any New Year family traditions? I would love to hear from you!
