A Letter from QVC CEO Mike George and a Letter from Paula Deen

A Letter From Mike George, President and CEO, QVC

To our customers,

Over the past week, in our online communities, our social forums, and our call centers, and through letters and emails to me, many of you have passionately shared your thoughts about QVC’s relationship with Paula Deen. This issue is so important to you and to our community that I wanted to talk with you directly about it, rather than couch our response in some anonymous corporate statement.

Many of you have expressed disappointment and even anger at the comments Paula has acknowledged making. Others feel equally strongly that Paula is not being treated fairly in the public debate and deserves forgiveness. Your spirited conversation reflects the complexity of the issues raised and the deep feelings surrounding them.

Regardless of where you stand, many of you are questioning what QVC is planning to do and whether we will handle our relationship with Paula in a respectful and appropriate manner – for Paula, for our customers, and for the broader community.

We owe you an answer. We too are troubled by what Paula has acknowledged saying. We’re also troubled by the allegations against her.  We deeply believe, as you do, that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

At the same time, we have enjoyed a positive, long-standing relationship with Paula.  She has always been gracious and supportive to every QVC team member she encountered.  And we value, as we hope you know, all of our relationships. We believe it’s important to handle difficult situations such as this in a thoughtful and fair manner that recognizes our common humanity.

And in any strong relationship, when troubles arise, the first step is to talk. We have talked with Paula and her team extensively over the last several days, and together we have considered what is best for our customers, for Paula, and for QVC. For now, we have decided to take a pause. Paula won’t be appearing on any upcoming broadcasts and we will phase out her product assortment on our online sales channels over the next few months. We all think it’s important, at this moment, for Paula to concentrate on responding to the allegations against her and on her path forward.

Some of you may wonder whether this is a “forever” decision – whether we are simply ending our association with Paula. We don’t think that’s how relationships work. People deserve second chances. And we always strive to do the right thing.

I am grateful for the openness and honesty you have brought to the conversation, and I recognize that many of you will be disappointed by our decision. Whatever your views, we will continue to do what we have always strived to do – create a great shopping experience, and earn your trust, and your business, every day.

Sincerely,

Mike George

President & CEO

QVC, Inc.

A Letter From Paula Deen

To my customers at QVC,

I want to let you know how much I value my relationship with all of you and with QVC. I’ve loved hearing from all of you over the years, with your calls and posts and letters.  I’ve so enjoyed my close relationship with David Venable and his team, and my warm interactions with the extended QVC family. I also appreciate the caring way that QVC has interacted with me over the past week.

As you know, I have some important things to work on right now, both personally and professionally. And so we’ve agreed that it’s best for me to step back from QVC and focus on setting things right.

I am truly sorry and assure you I will work hard to earn your forgiveness.

Paula

Food Network and Smithfield Hams have lost a customer. Now, so has QVC. Bad call. Way to lose customers who love and support Paula. Goodbye QVC.

I can not tell you how ashamed and sad I am that QVC would make this decision. They could have chosen to be the positive in this horendous mess and been the backbone in the critical attacks Paula Dean has found herself in. Not sure if I will follow QVC further as a shopper.

In other words, you not only put the screws to her, you convinced her to act like it was partly her idea. She could have told you to kiss her grits as a lot of people would. I think you along with all the other perfect corporations will regret this big time. If it doesn't bite you now, it will.

I greatly appreciate the professional manner in which you have handled this, QVC. It is to be commended. Whether I agree or disagree with your decision is not of issue here. I do believe integrity is a trait that is admirable. I appreciate you making an informed decision and sharing it in such a way with your loyal customers. Thank you.

I am glad that QVC communicated with Paul Deen before severing ties with her. We can all agree that what she said was wrong but she has apologized and asked for forgiveness. We all make mistakes and everyone deserves another chance. I feel like many have thrown Paula under the bus. I don't think the media has handled this in the best way. It appears that someone leaked this information to the media - something that was recorded 30 years ago if I am correct.

I think this is such a poor judgement call on your part. Could you honestly say that all the vendors for QVC have spotless records. I mean seriously, where does this madness STOP! If Paula Deen and QVC have had a good relationship and her dealings with you have been honesty then it is STUPID to dismiss her because of something that happened in the past and to someone else not even to you. I am VERY disappoined in this decision. Let's just hope that the media doesn't get a hold of some of your other vendors reputations because you are giving them that power over your business. What happens if somebody else comes up less than squeaky clean? Soon you would be OUT OF BUSINESS wouldn't you. Very disappointed.

I applaud both this decision and the way it was handled. Thank you for your candor and your professionalism.

Like many others, I was confused about why there was so much attention paid to the use of one word so long ago... and then I read the complaint and the deposition and I was sickened. My children are bi-racial, my husband is black. We struggle with how to teach our children about the insidiousness of racism in many parts of the country. We believe in education and discussion and taking time to work on what needs to be addressed... exactly what is being done here.

Thank you,
Heather

Goodbye, QVC. This entire situation has been blown WAY out of proportion. And since QVC decides to be a lemming and follow others....well, I don't need you.

Try being a leader for once, QVC. You're going to lose a lot more customers this way than you would have lost by keeping Paula on.

Shame on you for having no backbone.

For now, I believe that it is in my best interest to take a pause from QVC because they have some things to work out. {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown} As do Food Network, Smithfield, Target, Walmart, etc. It is sad that the PC police have gotten as far as they have in our lives. One day, it may be me, you, anybody that says something and somebody is having a bad day....so our lives would be ruined. Who are we to not forgive someone, when we have been forgiven for ALL our mistakes.

I hope this new blog doesn't trigger another week of comments from the customers repeating the same things. At the end I knew this was going to be the answer. It is obvious that QVC and Paula Deen had to be make the decision together. For now this is what it is. Time will tell. Nothing else to do, but wait.

sorry that you have made this decision. I will no longer be a QVC customer because of it. I will be returning the last item that I have purchased and plan to close my QVC account as soon as it is paid off.I think this was a very poor decision on your part and just sorry to see that you caved to pressure from some people that can't forgive a 30 year old mistake.

Very disappointed in QVC. Have shopped there over the past few years. Just received an order last week. But no more. good bye. It's disgraceful how you have treated her, how everyone has treated her. Supposing nobody in QVC has EVER said something they regret. How very blessed you all are in your perfect world.

WOW!. Yes Paula said that she has to focus on personal issues but for QVC to not have her on and to sell of what inventory she has is enough for me to say GOODBY. You can still give people a second chance QVC and still keep them on and have their products on.

I am very disappointed with QVC and so I will be saying HSN here I come.

I respect QVCs decision and appreciate the way it was handled. I expect them to hold ALL those they do business with to the same standards. So, when exactly are you going to take a BREAK from the Kardashians, as I find they are equally as offensive! Last edited on 6/27/2013

good lord , i am sick and tired of hearing about paula ... its not qvc's fault for taking her off the air its the appropiate thing to do ... just like kmart / sears / walmart / smithfield hams / etc and so forth. get over it people and move on.... people make mistakes big or small there are consequences.. didn't they teach you that in school ?
