Ellen DeGeneres is well-known as a beloved television host, but now she wants to come into your home in a different way—through her new collection of home goods, ED On-Air by Ellen DeGeneres. Her whimsical, stylish products are sure to give your décor a touch of something special. And because she’s got a real knack for decorating and entertaining, it only made sense to pick her brain on those very subjects!

Anne Creedon: What’s the inspiration for ED On-Air for this spring?

Ellen DeGeneres: Spring itself! In spring, people start moving outside—and I think the outdoors are as important as the indoors. If you’re going to spend time outside, why not make it beautiful? Why not make that an extension of your living space? You want outdoor pillows, candles for dining or entertaining, and beautiful furniture and accessories that are durable and will withstand the elements. You want things that can actually live outside—which is where you should live in the spring.

AC: What’s your favorite thing about spring?

ED: Spending more time outside. That and changing the décor inside a tiny bit. You might want to change a lampshade, tablecloth, or dishware. There’s nothing wrong with being springy!

AC: What do you think is the most important home decorating tip you could give our customers?

ED: Make it your own. Don’t try to copy what somebody else does because you see it in a magazine. It has to be comfortable and livable. Decorate for your lifestyle. And I love eclectic décor. I think that as long as things are beautiful, you can mix them together and it works. If it’s your style, it works.

AC: Neutral or colorful décor?

ED: Personally, I’m a neutral gal, but I also like to add color for a bit of flair. If it’s all neutral, it can become bland. I think you have to add a little bit of color to add some warmth.

AC: When did you first become interested in design?

ED: I think I’ve been interested in design since I was a little girl. My mother sold real estate for a while and I used to look at houses with her. I would see how different people decorated their homes, so I was constantly drawn to different people’s aesthetics and what they chose.

AC: What motivated you to launch a lifestyle brand?

ED: People would walk into my house and say, “I love that,” or “Where did you get that?” and so I wanted to share my ideas with everybody. It was always a passion of mine to create a beautiful environment in my home and work atmosphere because I like to be surrounded by things that inspire me. So my collection is for people who want beautiful, high-quality things that are affordable.

AC: Is there a story behind the name of your collection – ED On-Air?

ED: ED is my nickname and it’s very personal to me because only people who really know me call me that. And now that I’m sharing my design aesthetic with the world, it’s a personal relationship—so everyone gets to call me ED now!

AC: Do you have any favorite products in your line?

ED: That’s like picking my favorite pet! I can’t pick my favorite product. I wouldn’t put anything out there that I don’t love, so I can’t really choose.

AC: What do you like most about selling your products on QVC?

ED: That I get feedback immediately. When customers call in and say what they like about an item or why they’re interested in buying it, that’s the direct relationship I’m excited about. That’s why I started in standup—because I get to have that immediate feedback, that immediate relationship with people.

AC: How do you feel about the live aspect of being on QVC?

ED: Live is always better. You don’t know what’s going to happen and that’s the beauty of it!
