makeup q&a with jillian veran

hello again, philosophy girls. as the senior director of beauty at philosophy, i tend to receive a lot of beauty questions. unfortunately, i don’t always have a chance to answer all of them. so, i thought i would share some of the more frequently asked questions here for all to enjoy. and if you have a question that didn’t make it onto this list, just ask me on my jillian veran philosophy QVC facebook page, or leave a question in the comments section below.

q: how can i make my eye color pop?

a: if you really want to make your eyes pop, go opposite. while it always looks beautiful to see brown eyes wear brown or blue eyes wear navy, opposites attract when it comes to eye color.

  • dark-eyed girls: try wearing a lavender, periwinkle, or blue eye shadow

  • blue-eyed girls: try a sand, soft brown, or rich gold eye shadow

  • hazel- and green-eyed girls: try a plum or golden brown eye shadow

q: is liner necessary when wearing color around the eye?

a: wearing eyeliner is not a must, but it definitely creates a more finished look. lining eyes tightly with a black or dark brown liner creates dimension, makes the whites of your eyes look whiter, and helps showcase eyeshadow colors.

q: is the smoky eye out of fashion?

a: the smoky eye never really goes completely out of style, but it tends to morph every couple of seasons. this year, we are seeing a huge swing towards wearing color as a smoky look. you can easily achieve this by choosing a muted color, such as olive green or smoky gray. also, to keep the look modern, try to only blend two colors.

q: is divine cream-to-satin foundation spf 25 suitable during the summer?

a: you can and should use it during the summer. divine cream-to-satin foundation is buildable and has a unique texture that goes from cream to powder which, unlike traditional foundation, feels weightless and is perfect for summer. its satin finish ensures skin never looks heavy or made up, and the built-in spf 25 is an excellent way to help protect skin from damaging uva/uvb rays. i recommend applying right over freshly moisturized skin with your fingertips only where you need it. gently blend out with a sponge or the brush applicator that comes with your foundation. remember: because this formula is so luxurious and full of amazing skin care ingredients, less is more.

q: i’m over 50. can i still wear bright colors?

a: as a makeup artist, i've had the amazing opportunity to meet women from all walks of life, each one beautiful in her own unique way, and i believe you are never too old to wear something. it’s just a matter of how you wear it. if you are worried about wearing pops of color, simply keep them balanced and appropriate for your lifestyle. avoid layers of loud color and opt for soft, wearable sweeps of your favorite divine hues instead.

thanks so much for all the great feedback and support. feel free to leave a question in the comments section below. you might just see it come up in another blog post soon! i'll also be answering more beauty questions during our divine illumination shows on august 4 at 2 a.m. and 10 p.m. ET.
