MARCH FUR BABIES OF THE MONTH: THOSE QWAZY WABBITS!!

by on ‎03-07-2013 02:12 PM

Greetings fellow pet lovers!!

Since Easter is coming, I've dedicated this month's FUR BABY BLOG to some of the BEST PETS I've ever shared my life with.....my RABBITS!! Over the years I have fallen in love with these sweet creatures, either as pets, fosters, or those I've cared for at rescues and animal shelters. I have found rabbits to be VERY smart, VERY social and VERY loving.

Gizmo and Pierre

They all have individual personalities....some are more shy or more outgoing than others...but all LOVE the company of other rabbits and most love to be around their human family members and even the dogs and cats! Every year at Easter time, we have a little bunny "contest" to choose which bun gets to be the Easter Bunny! Of course ALL the rabbits share in the prize, which is extra greens, hay, carrots and some choice nibbles of apple slices and bananas, along with their pelleted food and hay!

Lily

(NOTE: DO NOT let your rabbit (or any other pet) near your Easter lilies, as they are quite poisonous to pets when consumed. Lily Rabbit was only allowed to "pose" with the lily in this photograph and then it was taken away from her!)

They also receive Easter presents of chewable wooden and rope or jute toys, which they adore! My rabbits are all housed indoors, in a big "bunny room" in my basement, where they have plenty of room to run around and socialize! We have cardboard bunny condos and rabbit habitats that they play in, and cardboard tubes to run through. In the warmer months, they also have a safe, predator proof play area outside in our yard. (Remember, rabbits should never live ONLY outdoors, even in a hutch. Everything is a predator to a rabbit, including neighborhood dogs and cats, foxes, and hawks. Ideally, your pet rabbit should live indoors, in a bunny proofed area.)

Annie

Banjo

My rabbits are all spayed and neutered and are all rescues. Obviously, bunnies are very proficient at making MORE bunnies, and that is what we are trying to avoid, of course, since there are so many homeless rabbits out there at shelters in need of loving homes. I encourage you to consider adopting a pet rabbit or two and to find out how much joy they can bring to your life! Check with your local SPCA or animal rescue organization. There are always MANY rabbits abandoned shortly after Easter, because folks buy the baby bunnies at pet stores to give to their children, and then find they don't really want them a few weeks later. Please don't buy your child a baby rabbit or chick or duck for Easter. Buy them a stuffed animal instead!!

But if you can open your heart and home to a new furry member of the family for a lifetime, then a rabbit is a fun, fascinating and loving choice for families with kids OVER THE AGE OF 10. Rabbits are not a good choice for younger children. If you have kids or grandkids under 10, a Guinea Pig is a much better choice.  To find out why and to answer any question you can think of about having a pet rabbit or properly caring for the pet rabbit you may already have, please visit this awesome website, run by the rabbit rescue that I actively volunteered with, when I lived in Southern California.....

They have tons of info, an online store for your rabbit, and lots of bunnies for adoption if you live in the area. Meanwhile, I'm wishing you a Happy Easter Season and sending lots of bunny hugs your way!!

MARCH QUESTIONNAIRE

Name(s):  Gigi, Panda, Lily, Jasper, Annie, Banjo, Gizmo and Pierre

Ages:   Ranging from 3 months to 9 years (Rabbits can live to be 10 years old or more if properly cared for!)

Height:  Tall enough to jump on the sofa if we get a running start! Sure wish we could jump as high as those darn cats!!

Weight:  Ranging from 3 pounds to 10 pounds. (Mom makes sure we don't eat junk food or too many pellets. It upsets our tummies and we'd also get too fat, which is bad for our health!)

Breeds:  Panda is a Dutch rabbit....Gigi is a Fuzzy Lop....Lily is a Netherlands Dwarf....Jasper and Banjo are Mixed Breed brothers....Annie is a Lop....Gizmo and Pierre are Mini Lops.  We also have other rabbits in our family, including a Flemish Giant and two Lionheads! Mom isn't partial...she loves us all the same!

Likes:  Carrots, lettuce, parsley, cilantro, carrot tops, blueberries and small pieces of apples, grapes, and bananas as treats! We also love fresh green timothy hay and our pelleted food by Oxbow!

Dislikes:  Loud noises, or shouting! We run into the nearest hiding place or THUMP really LOUDLY when we are startled or annoyed!!

Best Fur Friend:  Each other! But we also love PURRL the Cat and Eliza the Dog too!!

Can usually be found:  Munching hay or peeking out the window of our Bunny Condo!!

Favorite QVC Product:   The empty BOXES, of course! Especially when Mom tapes them up and cuts windows and doors into them. VOILA!! A bunny playhouse!!
