The first step is determining the shade category for your skin. Here are some simple guidelines:

 

Porcelain: very fair skin, burns easily, pink undertones
Fair: fair skin, burns easily, neutral or yellow undertones
Light: light skin, yellow undertones
Medium: 80% of the population (if you're uncertain, medium is the answer!)
Deep: olive to deep-skinned women of color, yellow tones
