In the Kitchen with David - January 23rd Show

Hello, foodies…

I’m sitting at my kitchen table and another snowstorm is just moving into my area. It’s so beautiful to watch the flurries as they begin to fall and blanket the grass. I’m enjoying some delicious white hot chocolate and I’m reminded of winters gone by and the wonderful foods that seem to taste even better when it’s bitter cold outside. Nothing warms me on a snowy day like hot, hearty soup! This Sunday, we have a big 4-hour In the Kitchen with David planned and we’ll have plenty of things to help make your winter recipes tasty and comforting.

“David’s Recipe” this week is in keeping with my promise to bring you healthy recipes in the month of January. We’ll be making my Wonton Yogurt Fruit Cups. This is a delicious low-fat dessert that is easy to make, and sure to bring a smile to everyone at the dinner table. We’ll use the Technique Aluminized Steel Nonstick 12-cup Square Muffin Pan (K19286) to bake the wontons to form our cups. We’ll then fill them with creamy yogurt and fruit spread and then top them off with mixed berries. Be sure to look for the recipe on QVC.com.

“Cookbook Corner” this weekend will see the return of a 2-book set from our friends at Taste of Home! This book set will be a great help as you prepare healthier dishes for your family. Look for over 780 total recipes from Guilt-Free Cooking and Comfort Food Diet (F09088). You’ll love things like Pizza Pockets, Mexican Lasagna, and Chicken and Dumpling soup! These two books will be available at a While Supplies Last Price…so get your copies before they're gone!

“Food for Thought” this week has to do with cooking and baking with fruit. As I look to eat smarter in 2011, I have included more fruit in my diet…especially for desserts or snacks. I tend to use fruit in smoothies and in yogurt and I also love to use fruit in my baking. When your fresh berries are on sale at the market…stock up! I buy a lot of blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries and freeze them. Here’s a useful tip: When using berries in home-baked muffins, don’t defrost them before adding them to your batter. If they are still frozen when they go into the oven, they’ll hold their shape and not “bleed” into the muffins or make them soggy!

So, as the snow starts to fall a little harder outside, I’m inspired to ask this blog question: What’s the one food or drink you crave when a snowstorm hits your area? Do you crave chili, stew, or soup? Do you love watching the snow fall while sipping hot chocolate or warm tea? For me, it’s a throwback to my childhood. I’ve always loved chicken noodle soup and saltine crackers on a snowy winter day! It makes me feel warm, safe, and secure. Share your winter cravings with our ever-growing family of foodies here on In the Kitchen with David. See you Sunday at Noon ET!

Keep it WARM and flavorful!
