It's Gem Week!

by on ‎01-07-2008 03:20 PM

This is really going to be a great week. The gemstones that are featured are some of my favorites. There are two incredible gemstone TSV's this week. The first is a new cut developed and trademarked especially for QVC. You will not be able to find this anywhere else. The second is a gorgeous Apatite and diamond Ring. The color of apatite has often been described as deep ultramarine teal. There are many other beautiful stones that will be featured during Gem Week

Did you know that stones have families? The quartz's are a great example of this. Amethyst, Citrine, Crystal Quartz, Cognac, Lemon, Mint and Rose are all part of the Quartz family the big difference is the color. If it is purple, it is Amethyst, if it is yellow or gold it is Citrine, etc. Other people call green Quartz, Green Amethyst, but that is not correct. It has to be purple to be called Amethyst. Quartz is actually the most abundant mineral in the world, but gem quality, which is what QVC uses, is much more difficult to find. There are many great legends about Quartz. It is known as the “philosophers stone and believed to show the future. It is also used by yoga instructors to facilitate meditation and by others to stimulate and amplify creativity. Citrine was the favorite stone of Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford. The name comes from the French word Citrone. Citrines are the zodiac stone for Scorpios and the planetary stone for Virgos. It is the November birthstone and is said to be associated with lightheartedness, cheerfulness, and hope. Citrine is found in Brazil, Madagascar, Russia, and even the United States.

Carnelian is a red variant of Chalcedony and is named after a red wine grape variety. A one-hour Carnelian show will make its debut during Gem Week. It was called sardonyx in ancient times and was the stone of victors and victory. Many also consider the symbol of joy and peace and is said to benefit the wearers health and love life. Hum, I may have to start wearing this every day.

Jade is a mystical stone that is said to be associated with the bounties of nature. Jade is said to represent the nine great accomplishments: charity, goodness, virtue, knowledge, skill, morality, divination, rectitude, and harmony. The ancient Chinese believed that jade is forged from a rainbow.

The word aquamarine comes from the Latin words “aqua marina” which means sea water. Aquamarine is said to bring good luck and have healing powers. It is found mainly in Brazil but also in India, Russia, China, and in several states in the US. It is part of the beryl family which is associated with married love. Those who believe in its mystic properties might wear it to strengthen their barbital bonds.

Garnets come in a variety of colors and we bring you many of these colors on QVC. It is said to symbolize marital love and fidelity. Noah was believed to have a lantern made out of garnet to light the inside of the ark. Garnet comes from Latin word for pomegranate because of its color resemblance to the seeds. It is the birthstone for January (my birth month)

Turquoise in found in the Southwestern United States as well as the Middle East, Mexico, and China. Turquoise is considered the lucky stone for many professions. Many of the top US jewelry designers are now using the “spider web” turquoise from China because of the ability to hold a better polish and it interesting, rich color. Turquoise is mentioned in the Bible concerning the mine of Isaac. It is the stone of Sagittarius and a birthstone for December. It is a powerful, protective stone believed to guard against the evil eye, disease, and accidents.

There are so many more gemstones to talk about! Stay tuned this week and I will update you on many of the other stones that I didn't get a chance to speak about here. I hope that you are enjoying Gem Week so far!!
