Looking forward to some Summer fun? I know that I am! Even though Summer may not literally mean the same freedom from schedules, alarm clocks, dress codes, and curfews that it did when we were kids, there is still something freeing about this season! The freedom to dress a little more casually, or maybe even a little more girly. The encouragement to show a little more skin, the necessity of a pedicure much more frequently, and the justification to buy that adorable SPF 50 floppy hat in the resort gift shop!
Summer for many of us brings back memories of family gatherings, road trips, and traditions. I never tire of pulling out the slide projector and big box of slides when we gather at my mom’s house. Isn’t it funny how you know where the “good ones” are in that big box of many little boxes of slides? I guess some memories are just better than others, and some don’t need to be re-visited!
Many of my childhood Summer memories revolve around trips “up north”, as we Minnesotans call visits to the cabins on the tens of thousands of lakes that we take pride in. My grandfather had a place on Gull Lake, near Nisswa, Minnesota. One of the highlights of my annual Summer vacation was a visit to the Totem Pole Gift Shop. One year I made a promise to myself to save up enough money to buy a turquoise ring. It was $2.70, which was a lot of money for a kid in the early 1970s!
I obviously have never forgotten that first turquoise treasure in my life. I think that is part of the beauty of American West Jewelry.
