Generations...

This weekend I was in Louisiana helping my Mother clean out closets and storage in her home.  She moved into an apartment in a retirement community and wanted to start getting rid of as much clutter as possible.  There was one box with my name on it containing things such as my comic book collection from the early 60’s, miscellaneous rocks (I guess from my early interest in gems), newspaper clippings from various events, and a peace pipe (no clue where it came from).  In the bottom of the box I found a real treasure;   the ring mandrel that belonged to my Great Grandfather, Clarence Gill, who owned a jewelry store in Homer, Louisiana.  I knew he was a jeweler because I own an incredible set of cuff links and studs in 18k gold that he made.  A little research showed the mandrel was made in the late 19th century.

This discovery started me thinking about what wonderful mementos we could leave to the next generation.  Most importantly, they must have sentimental value such as the cuff links made by my Great Grandfather.  They must also be durable to last through the years.  I decided to look at what we had here at the Q and see what I would be proud to hand down to my descendants.  Since I have two sisters, a sister in law, three nieces, and six great nieces that all love jewelry, I should probably start making a list.

My first thoughts were of diamonds. QVC offers a broad range of great styles (and prices) ranging from the Affinity ¼ ct total weight cluster studs (J274649) and also available in ½ ct tw and 1 ct tw  to the magnificent Michael Beaudry 1 ct tw Diamond Round Halo Ring (J286978).  I thought a cross in gold could be a special gift.  I really like the Eternagold Polished and Textured Cross Pendant (J271268) or the Eternagold Polished Cross Pendant (J274237).

Designer jewelry was also an easy choice; each piece in Barbara Bixby’s collection is a work of art that will bring awe for many years to come.  Barbara’s Sterling and 18k Gold Band Ring (J284687) and her Sterling and 18k Gold Pansy and Butterfly Key Enhancer (J261785) would remind us always of spring and happy things.

Being as passionate about gemstones as I am, I would obviously have to pick a couple of gem treasures.  These pieces would have to include great color and timeless styling.  Some choices could include the magnificent Premier 12 ct Morganite & ¾ ct tw Diamond Ring (J285135) for a WOW,  the Choice of Cushion-Cut Gemstone & Diamond Accent Ring in 14K Gold (J313930), or the American West  Sterling Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Ring (J280712).

There are just too many great pieces to choose from.  I hope you have your favorite piece and someone special to leave it to.  Please let me know what you treasure and who could inherit it.

Three generations; my Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandfather, the jeweler about 90 years ago!

Take care,
