My new Bucket List: Inspired by Diana Nyad!

Hi everyone,

By chance, have your heard of Diana Nyad?  She is the 64-year-old woman, who last week became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without fins or a shark cage.  This was her 5th attempt and after 53 hours she completed the 110 miles, something that no person had ever done before. Her accomplishment is truly amazing, but it’s her spirit that I find most inspiring. I guess she just proved; that the 60’s are the new 20’s……{#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

Diana was asked how she felt about accomplishing this amazing challenge at the age of 64, she responded:

The thing about aging is, it's true that the clock seems to be ticking faster as you get older. It isn't, but it seems to be. Time seems to be running out. And I wanted to swim this endeavor not to just be the athletic record. I wanted it to be a lesson for my life that says, be fully engaged. Be so awake and alert and alive every minute of every waking day, because that's where I had to be for these fortunately years to get this done.”

As I've gotten older, I've also had that feeling that time is speeding up; but in truth, it’s only my appreciation of time that has changed.  I found her words to be so powerful when she said: ‘I wanted it to be a lesson for my life that says, be fully engaged.’  Those 3 simple words mean so much, ‘be fully engaged’.  I am taking this as one of my life lessons.

After reading about Diana, I decided it was time to update my bucket list. I often ask my friends & acquaintances what’s on their list.  Quite often the things on their list intrigues me so much that I end up adding their ideas to my own list.  In the end, I seem to have a rolling list which I constantly update.

This past year I was able to cross off:

  1. Become a Dad

  2. Travel to Nepal and go on an elephant-back safari

  3. Run the Marine Corps Marathon

I have now updated my bucket list to include 4 new experiences:

  1. Run the Great Wall of China Marathon

  2. Do a cattle drive

  3. Take my dad on a train trip from Toronto to Vancouver.

  4. Write a book

So my question for you is; Do you have a bucket list?  I would love if you’d share 3 of the things on your list. I’m always looking to ‘borrow’ new ideas.  Thanks in advance.

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day Weekend. Here’s to crossing off another bucket list item this fall season.

Safe Travels,
