Paying Tribute to a Dear Friend, a True Gentleman: Nolan Miller.

Posted by Mary Beth Roe 1353958565.383

I had the privilege of attending Nolan Miller's memorial service on November 15th in Los Angeles. Even though he passed away in June, a service was not held until just recently. Of course, I had to be there!! I worked with Nolan for twenty years and loved him as one of my dearest friends!

There were several celebrities there who Nolan had designed gowns and clothes for, such as Joan Collins, Jackie Collins, Joan Van Ark, Michelle Lee and Stephanie Beecham. The "Dynasty" and "Knot's Landing" ladies were well represented. People like Sophia Loren, Linda Evans and Ann Margret were unable to attend, because they were out of the country. There were two celebrities from "Days of Our Lives": Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe) and her beau, Brandon Beemer (ex-Shawn Brady), who I was very excited to meet, since I watched that show off and on for about 4 decades!

There were men and women in attendance who were top executives of some of the big TV studios and movie companies that had worked with Nolan over the 50+ years he had been designing costumes and clothing for tv shows and movies. Mark Zunino, who worked along side Nolan designing gowns and clothes for more than 20 years and took over the business when Nolan retired, was the man of the hour. Not only had Mark been taught by Nolan and has become an outstanding designer in his own right, but he also took care of Nolan for the 5 years he fought the lung cancer and did more for Nolan than anyone else in Nolan's lifetime! Nolan was like a father to Mark, and it was emotional for Mark to speak about Nolan. I got choked up, too.

When I spoke at the service, I shared that even though Nolan had spent most of his career designing for the rich and famous, I think the most important thing he did was spending 20 years of his life making everyday women across the country experience glamor like they had never experienced it before! His jewelry designs made women feel beautiful and special, like princesses, and yet it was affordable so everyone could feel that way!

I shared how Nolan knew the QVC viewers enjoyed seeing him on QVC, but he had never experienced love like he did after he announced he had lung cancer.  The viewers showered him with love through emails and cards and well wishes on the phone during his shows, and it not only amazed him, but it motivated him to fight the disease and keep designing for QVC! It gave him strength to keep going, and all of you who were part of that, I thank you!

I wore the 'angel pin' to the memorial that Nolan designed for me and that many of you own, too. I told them that Nolan used to always call me his 'angel', and I think it was because I was always praying for him and reminded him of that when I'd get the chance. So it was a very special moment and memory that I have from the night he presented the angel pin to me on QVC! I will treasure that pin as long as I live!

It was a very special evening remembering that charming, handsome man, who had a lot of creative talent, but also made each one of us feel like a million dollars when we wore his jewelry and as we continue to wear it for many years to come! I am so blessed to have known Nolan, to have had him as a dear friend, and to be able to share his memorial with you. Let me know how Nolan made you feel and how you feel now when you wear his jewelry. By the way, there are still several pieces of his jewelry collection on qvc.com. Also, you can see Mark Zunino's clothing line on qvc.com, too.

Counting our blessings,

Mary Beth Roe

Dearest Mary Beth, what a sweet picture of you and Nolan! You were always so beautiful together. I had forgotten how pretty bleached blonde you were back in those days. I'm so happy you got to go to his memorial. You will always remember that! And isn't it wonderful you have Gods promise that you will see him again someday? The kindness you showed him was so precious. I know God saw all you did for him and the encouragement you gave to him. Your reward in heaven will be great! I will cherish all of my jewelry from Nolan. He was a wonderful man! And you are a treasure Mary Beth. I wish you love and blessings always! Merry Christmas! Kathi

Thank you, Mary Beth, for sharing his memorial service with us. I believe I had watched the two of you all those twenty years. I have many of his pieces and treasure them even more now. He was such a gentleman and classy man. Loved watching the two of you together. I did get to speak to him one time when he was presenting the triple heart pendant. I had one for myself and then bought two for my nieces in memory of their mother. Mine represented my mom, sister and me. Theirs represented the two of them and their dear mom. I believe he was touched when I told the story. I know he will be missed very much. I think of him often and am so thankful to have some of those glorious pieces he designed. He sure was one of a kind. Love these photos. Beautiful of you and him. Have a blessed holiday.

Mary Beth, tears flowed down my face as I read your blog. I watched you and Nolan from day 1. There was a special connection from the first. It's like when you meet someone for the first time you know you will always be friends. I remember when you had Ryan, Nolan made the stork pin with the baby just for you. However, being the angel you are you asked if he would make it so we all could enjoy it. I definitely treasure each and every piece (and it's quite a number) of my Nolan jewelry! Thank you for sharing this with us. I believe God had to be with you that night or you could not have gotten through with what you were sharing. Wishing you and your family a blessed holiday season.

Hi Mary Beth! It must have been a wonderful service. He was such a gracious man. I have the clear crystal initial pendant P and also his crystal bangle that I wear often. It is undeniably eye-catching jewelry and makes me feel special. QVC makes it possible for us to get to know great designers personally. I will continue to watch Mark too!

So sweet and considerate of you to share the details of Mr. Miller's memorial service with us here on the Forum. I had no idea that Mr. Miller had even passed away, although I knew that he had been ill for quite some time. I know from watching you two on air that you shared a very special friendship. He was such a classy gentleman and I am honored to own some of his jewelry designs. He was one of a kind, and will be missed by many.

Thank You Mary Beth! You are truely an Angel. I have the Angel pin, and I did as you did, put it in a place that I could see it everyday to remind me to pray for him. You are truely blessed to have known him and him to know you. I think of both of you when I wear my pin, and say a special little prayer for both of you and your families. I was very sad to hear this news. I had no idea that Nolan passed in June. I will continue to love his jewelry the rest of my life!

Mary Beth, Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about Nolan Miller, I've always liked his clothing designs, especially on "Dynasty", and he's always had a very nice jewelry line on QVC.

Formerly poster TY, I had to register a new nickname TY1.

Sorry to hear of Nolan's death. I am happy you were able to attend his memorial and speak on his behalf. My first purchase from him was a round eyeglass pin that I wore for many years before my eyes declined to the point I never take the glasses off, so now I just wear it for it's beauty!

Another note on a different subject...My family first started making your Baked Orange French Toast from your "More Family Favorites" cookbook for Christmas morning back in 2000 and it's become a family tradition. It's spread from my house to that of my daughter and 2 sons who are all married and have 9 children among them. Thanks for sharing your life with us. Happy New Year!
