I can hardly believe that we are already half way through August. I am gearing up for my August 29 show and excited to share my new designs with you.
Since my last entry, I received a few emails asking me about how I started my business and knew that I wanted to be a jewelry designer. So, I thought I would use this opportunity to share a little of my story with you.
I was born and raised in New York and enjoyed a wonderful childhood. My earliest memories are of playing in my mother's jewelry box and accessorizing my clothing, tying a heart charm to my belt, hanging a pin off a chain draped around my neck or transforming a necklace into a belt and weaving it through the belt-loops in my jeans. Some of my friends played with dolls, other played sports, I accessorized. It was natural to me. My mother encouraged me to celebrate my individuality and to experiment creating beautiful things. Designing jewelry is part of my DNA. I have always known that I would be a jewelry designer and have always had an organic eye for design and color interpretation.
My mother, a couturier, was my most influential teacher in life and art. She taught me to see the beauty in the most common details. She shaped my sense of style and design. The greatest legacy she left me was to experience the beauty in everything. And, today, I share her philosophy, as everything around me inspires me from nature to architecture. As I proceed through each day, I am always attuned to shapes, contours, colors and textures which provide an ample palette from which I draw inspiration. Each piece I design is an expression of the beauty in all the little things around me as shared through the eyes of my Mother.
The women who wear my jewelry also serve as great inspiration to me. I still get a thrill when I walk down the street and see a woman wearing a piece I designed. Usually, I immediately start designing a piece to complement the one(s) she was wearing!
Today, I still set aside a certain amount of time to sketch every week. And, when I am not designing, I spend as much time with my family as possible. I have three grown sons and eight wonderful grandchildren. I take family vacations whenever possible. This past summer was one of my best. Ron and I had at least 2 of our grandchildren out at the beach with us every weekend. They made me laugh and smile - what a gift.
And, as all of you know, in addition to my family, jewelry brings me great joy, as well. For me, wearing jewelry makes me feel as if I am wrapped in one of life's greatest luxuries. Wearing jewelry makes me happy. It is as if I am admitting that I am entitled to look good and feel great. You have to wear clothing; you want to wear jewelry. When I put on my jewelry in the morning, I put on what feels good. I share that philosophy with the women I design for, as well.
My hope is that my jewelry brings you great joy, too. Please tune in on August 29, as I think my new designs will really make you smile.
Until then, my very best,
Judith
