The other week, we sent the team to our quarry in Connemara to lift marble ahead of the winter season. While clearing an old working, we came upon some rusting metal and wood parts and laid them aside as they seemed unusual. I arranged to have them brought back to the workshop in Rathfarnham village where we could clean them up a little and have a closer look. You can see that there is a pulley wheel and part of a wooden post with strong supporting bars.
On closer inspection and from an old photograph taken around 1900, I can clearly see that what we found was part of the old wire saw pulley system for extracting the large blocks that was used over 100 years ago and powered by a steam engine.
I am excited to have found these historic pieces and will have them restored and put on display in our store.
You can learn more about the history of our Quarry in my book. I will treasure these artefacts from the working history of our marble Quarry.
