First-Ever Gem Show!

by on ‎06-20-2011 12:54 PM

We've been presenting gemstone jewelry ever since QVC started 25 years ago, so you can imagine how difficult it is to have a "first-ever" show on Gem Day! But on Saturday, June 25th, we have one! Right after we kick off Gem Day together with Jane's Rock Stars at Midnight ET, we have our first-ever alexandrite hour at 2 a.m. ET! This may be the only time this year we have a chance to do an entire hour on this exotic beauty. Alexandrite is a rare variety of chrysoberyl, and the gemstone varieties of chrysoberyl are among the rarest in the world. The name alexandrite comes from Tsar Alexander because it was discovered on his birthday by Russian emerald miners in 1830. It has an unusual optical property in that its color changes from green in daylight to brownish-red in incandescent lighting. This green-to-red change is also part of the Russian influence, as red and green were the Imperial colors. It may be a stunning gemstone, but it's also one of the hardest, measuring 8.5 on the Mohs scale.

We've seen two gorgeous alexandrite pieces from the Smithsonian Collection that were wildly popular. In fact, when you visit the National Gem Gallery (and I hope you can this summer!), there's an amazing alexandrite on display that changes color right before your eyes due to the lighting. Now we'll have an entire hour for the first time in 25 years to discuss and enjoy this incredible gemstone. I know so many gem lovers are looking forward to an entire hour of this gem, all set in 14K gold. So, cancel all other plans for June 25th because we have 24 hours of Gem Day coming your way with many new stories to tell.  See you at midnight, when we'll see a the stunning TSV, a new variety of opal from Brazil, the only HUEtopia pieces, (our new fashionable gemstone line) and a brand new shade of blue topaz called Ostroblue. Our buyer Allison says it's the most beautiful blue gem she has ever seen.  Plus, throughout the day over 100 brand new item, with many new designs saved for our second Jane's Rock Stars of the day from 9pm to midnight
