How to Make a Headboard (A Very Pretty One, Too!)

by on ‎05-23-2014 01:14 PM

Hi, everyone!

Have you ever seen those home-makeover shows where they make a headboard in like two minutes? Because I see the magic of TV every day, I know that it really takes longer than those two minutes. But, I honestly didn’t know if it was an all-day affair or not. So, I decided to try it.

All in all, this took me about two hours…not bad for a Queen headboard that looks amazing, if I do say so myself! And, here's exactly what I said in the video so you have the steps handy.

You'll Need:

  • Standard piece of plywood cut into:

    (1) 56 x 29" board

    (3) 29 x 18 3/4" boards

  • 1 2 x 4" cut in half so that each is 44" long

  • Quilt batting and 1" foam to cover the 3 pieces of wood (Cut the foam to cover the 29 x 18 3/4" boards.)

  • 2-1/2 yards of fabric cut to cover the 3 small boards with 4" for folding (so 33 x 22")

  • Hardware: staple gun, staples, tape measure, button cover kit, 1" and 2" screws, hand drill/screw gun, glue gun

  • To secure the headboard on a wall, you'll need cleatbrackets. Or, get two thin boards to make legs

Assembly:

  1. Cover each board in foam. Lay the foam on top of the small board and lay the folded batting on top. Then, wrap the whole thing in another layer of batting. Staple the back. Do this three times.

  2. Cover each wrapped board in fabric and staple the back.

  3. Take the 3 boards and lay them side by side on the big (56 x 29") board. Use 1" screws to attach them from the back.

  4. After securing the plywood to the fabric rectangles, apply the posts with the 2" screws.

  5. On the front, decide where to place fabric buttons. Staple the fabric and hot glue buttons covered in fabric to the stapled area.

That's it! Your very own custom headboard is just one of the projects we’re tackling on You’re Home with Jill this Wednesday…I’ll also have DIY lampshades and an easy floral arrangement to show you, too. I hope you have an incredible memorial day weekend! May the weather be nice and your barbecues be yummy!

From my home to yours,
