Let's Make Coasters! You'll Love Wednesday's DIY Project!

I think we all have our own little pet peeves. And, I’ll bet I’m not the only one who hates finding water rings on the furniture! It’s a never-ending battle to get my hubby and kids to use a coaster. Then, when that battle’s won, everything changes when company comes and I run out of coasters. Inevitably, there will be a water ring on my furniture the next day.

So what’s a girl to do? Join me on Wednesday for You’re Home with Jill! We’re making DIY coasters, courtesy of an idea I saw on one of my favorite blogs—Two Girls Being Crafty. You won’t believe how easy this is! Here are the instructions, in case you want to get started.

What You Need:
•    Decorative paper (like scrapbook or wrapping paper)
•    Scissors
•    Pencil
•    Felt
•    Modge Podge
•    Water-resistant acrylic or polyurethane spray (clear)
•    Waterproof glue
•    Sponge brush
•    Coaster-size ceramic tiles

Directions:
1.    Trace the tile onto your paper and cut it out—it’s up to you if you want the paper to cover the whole top or if you want a bit of the tile exposed to make a border. Another option is to cut the paper so it stretches down and covers the sides of the tile. I chose to just cover the tops of my coasters.
2.    Next, put some Modge Podge on your brush and apply it to the tile. Quickly place your paper on top. Then, cover the paper with a layer of Modge Podge.
3.    Let the tile dry for about 10-15 minutes before applying another coat. I coated each tile with about three coats of Modge Podge total.
4.    While the tiles are drying, cut your felt into circles…you can do one big circle, or put one small circle on the corner of each coaster. I think it’s a little more stable with four circles, but that’s up to you!
5.    When the top is dry, spray the coasters with your acrylic or polyurethane spray. (You may want to apply several coats.) Let the coasters dry, then you’re done! Aren't these beautiful!

DIY Coasters

Sharon, the crafty gal who made these coasters, said she had most of the supplies on hand, so her total cost was about $5. If you’re a crafter, that’s not unrealistic. I had most of the supplies in my closet, so my total wasn’t much higher. And, Sharon also had another good point—these make great gift ideas! If you know a friend’s favorite color or saying, imagine how much they’d appreciate a practical gift—especially one you made!

I’ll see you this Wednesday for You’re Home with Jill at 7pm ET. Stay tuned for my recipe blog on Tuesday…I’ve got one of the greatest breakfast recipes ever!

From my home to yours,
