Do you remember the first mattress you ever bought? I do. I walked into a local department store and was completely overwhelmed by the choices. I had no idea what features to look for. The clerk asked me if I was looking for a firm or soft mattress. Good question…I didn't know! He then began showing me row after row of mattresses that had a huge range in pricing. I was a recent college grad and on a budget, so I began shopping only for price. (Boy do I wish I knew about QVC and Easy Pay back then!) Once we got into a section that had digestible pricing, he told me to lay on each of the mattress to "test drive" the comfort. AWKWARD. I remember going from mattress to mattress, lying down—for a good 30-60 seconds—watching the sales guy watch me lie down, and ultimately jumping back up from the sheer uncomfortable feeling of trying out a mattresses in public. Have you ever gone through this???

The salesman convinced me that with my bad back (I have scoliosis), soft would be better. (I think back then, "soft" was code for "saggy.") The word "firm" scared me and quite frankly sounded uncomfortable. I had a vision of the Princess and the Pea and not being able to feel the pea because the mattress was stiff and thick. In the end, I wound up buying a mattress that was on sale and labeled "soft". After about 3 nights with my new mattress, I was tossing and turning and not getting any sleep. What a bummer! Now I was out all that money and I was tired.

Let's face it, a good night's sleep is priceless—so what would you pay for a GREAT night's sleep? A trick question??? Not really…just food for thought. A mattress is one of those purchases that (if done correctly) should only happen a couple times in our adult life. Nowadays, there's so much technology and testing that goes into each mattress, it would be silly to have to replace them more often. Really the only factor is personal comfort and preference.
