A Walk Down Memory Lane With My “Pop Pop”, My Truest Buddy, My Dad

by on ‎06-13-2014 10:17 AM

It’s Father’s day month, and time for another picture blog. This time, we are celebrating my “Pop Pop”, my truest buddy, my Dad. Some fun facts on “Big Dave” as we also call him: he loves black licorice; he has wicked sweet tooth and also loves Cheryl’s frosted cookies; he has always dreamed of owning a vintage T-bird (or a little Porsche); he worked for Ford for 40 years so he has a thing for cars. He loves golf (what guy doesn’t?), he can fix anything with duct tape and super glue, he cannot cook (other than PB&J on toast), he gives the greatest advice, he is the most patient, and non-judgmental person I know, and he has hung more pictures in more apartments and first homes for me than i can count. (He also lives for Dunkin Donuts, goes to Einstein bagel every morning for my Mom, loves his alma mater Iowa football, and my greatest memories are of him and I strolling through Home Depot together as a kid). When I was little, i believed in Santa because he used his big Dad shoes dipped in baking flour to make magic footprints in the fireplace. he used to tuck me into bed with a story about a bird that tickled me, and his speech at my wedding made everyone cry, even grown men. (It also lasted 30min even though i told him he had 20. Ha. That’s my Dad!)

Here is a little walk down memory lane to introduce you to the man behind my heart and courage. You’ll never meet a man so likable and unintimidating. (And he’s a lawyer, so that’s not normally the case Smiley Happy

The 70's were great. I must've been 5 here. Christmas morning....or was it my bday?!? Clearly I'm confused in this pix

My dad's not Mr Joe Cool so this studly pix of us boating w his shades on, cracks me up. Ps: he doesn't swim and hates boats so this is one of those 'suck it up for My kid' moments

I am 9 here. I did not have a sprained arm but I thought it was cool to rock a bandage. Don't ask. And dad never lights his cigars. Just chews on them. Again don't ask

Fast fwd to college, Penn state, majored in Mktg. Invited dad as my date to a sorority dance during parents weekend. (What's with those earrings?)

Senior prom 1991

I graduated college in 1995. I moved right to NYC to hustle and beg for a job in TV. My dad supported me 100% (I had a mktg degree tho, So secretly think he thought I was a little nuts!)

Took my dad as my date to friend's wedding. He's the cutest dancer (although steps on ur toes a little)

Speaking of weddings...

At 40, I wasn't sure I'd get chance to have dad walk me down the aisle. And then it happened. I can just see the pride in his face

Happy Father's Day to all the dad's, daddy's, pops, big guys, etc. out there!

Shawn
