Shoot Like-a-pro; Photography Made Easy—Winter Edition

Why is there a snowman on my camera? Most cameras have a few automated settings already built into their features. One of the least used is the Beach/Snow setting. Usually you can find this setting indicated by a snowman and/or a palm tree. This setting is extremely useful this time of year. Right now, the sunshine is extremely intense. Have you ever gotten a sunburn in winter? If so, then you know what I'm talking about. When the sun reflects off of a smooth, white surface like snow or sand, that reflection creates a very intense contrast between the light and the shadows of your subject. When you use the beach/snow setting, you can diminish the harshness of the light in the picture.

How may pics have you taken of the kids sledding that you can barely make out their facial features? I’ll bet they're pretty dark and the background snow is intense. If you can get in the habit of using this setting on your camera, you'll avoid these bad shots. Also, don’t be surprised if your automatic flash fires, too. Even in the most intense light, a camera may fire its flash to fill in light on the subject.

So don’t forget about one of the least used settings in winter. The Beach/Snow setting will help you take better pictures this winter.

And please do not take pictures while sledding…"Don’t sled and snap!"
