I was recently out and about running some errands and passed a house with kids playing in a sprinkler on their front lawn. My mind drifted back to years ago when I was a child and couldn’t wait for the warm weather so I could play in the sprinkler in my own yard. I don’t know about you, but a change of season or warm breeze in the air conjures up wonderful memories of my past! At the very hint of sunshine, I would beg my parents to get out the sprinkler so I could play in the water with the neighborhood kids!

One of my earliest memories of summertime was getting to stay with my grandparents. Nan and Tat (as I lovingly called them) always welcomed we with open arms and delicious food...my grandmother was an amazing southern cook, and boy could I eat! We would spend the afternoons swinging on their front porch just talking and laughing…chatting with the neighbors and playing. Does anyone still do that?

Then it was time for vacation, and my parents loved to go to the beach. Each year we went some place different and to this day, as an adult, I find that those memories come rushing back every time I visit a beach. I love the salt air…the hot sand…the totally relaxing feeling of being near the ocean, and boy did I have fun! My parents would park themselves under a big umbrella with their watchful eyes on me as I would go to the water’s edge with my bucket and shovel and attempt to build sand castles…usually my father would have to come along and help. I was in heaven!

And last but certainly not least...when we couldn’t get to the ocean, my parents always had some type of boat that we would take the family out on the numerous lakes in the area. I was joined by several nieces and nephews for a hot summer boat ride and then a yummy picnic lunch. Sprinklers, vacations, bare feet and climbing trees…a time before home video games and smart phones didn’t exist! Summer for me is a season full of memories...
