Kinda ironic I should be writing about my fav beauty products, because right now, they are all in boxes stacked in a corner. I am moving this week. I can assure you, over the next few days, sweaty, unshowered, tired from unpacking from dusk to dawn…I will NOT be feeling so beautiful even with my fav products. This pic of me getting my hair done for my wedding, describes how I feel about moving.
Tonight, July 1st, we are doing a special edition Tuesday Night Beauty called, “Shawn’s Beauty Picks from Head to Toe”. I’m so excited. I’ve never been that girl who loves to try every new thing that comes on the market. I’m not concerned with trend for trend sake. My personal mantra is, never try to be something you’re not. I tried that once. i used to so admire a fellow news anchor I worked with. She was so poised, beautiful, classy, well liked, always put together. I wanted to be her so badly, and I spent three years trying to mirror her and what I thought a news anchor should be. Until I realized, I was wearing someone else’s skin, and everything that made me, me, was buried under layers of “put on”. So, first lesson: Be yourself. Me, I like what I like and I’m ok admitting that I’m a creature of habit who doesn’t embrace change well so it takes a lot for me to fall in love with new beauty things. Hence you can trust when I go bananas for something.
I don’t wear makeup on my days off (which I’m sure has my husband Joe asking what ever happened to the honeymoon phase bc I’m already at the “lets wear sweatpants” phase) and I am addicted to these $2.99 elastic hairbands you get in multi colors at CVS when I can’t be bothered to shower. I hate unwanted hair and I’m not afraid to talk about the places I have it (there’s one on my chin that refuses to give up). I hate cellulite, and I’m wondering why no company has been able to cure it with a cream. I am a complete blow dryer snob and would not part with mine ever. I’m ok admitting it cost $159 because it’s totally worth it. I use cotton swabs to touch up smudges of mascara around my eyes, and toothbrushes are very handy for cleaning my engagement ring (and brushing eyebrows) so I’m not ‘little miss fancy pants’, more like ‘little miss keep it real'.
I’m into “cool” blonde highlights, and “warm” tones for everything else (eye shadow, bronzer etc) I’m addicted to bronzer, super thick eyeliner, great mascara, and my desert island beauty item is shade of lipstick from MAC that I can’t part with (Hue) even though everybody wants me to change it.
I think some things you need to pay big money for to get big results. And other things you don’t. I think if you had no choice but to survive on cosmetics and skincare from the drug store you could, but if you want the hair and skin of the women you envy, science and quality are likely going to require you spending a bit more. It’s like renting a car. You can definitely rent the economy model bc it will certainly get you to and from, but renting the GT convertible or the luxury SUV with moonroof is just such a better experience.
I have been at QVC 7yrs and my 2 best most game-changing beauty discoveries since coming here are philosophy's Purity Made Simple (it really is the best), and the Clarisonic (It’s not hype, it is worth it, and it does radically improve even the best skin, bc mine was never that bad to begin with. If you’re never going to be convinced to spend that much, I get it and I’m fine with that. I’m just saying, you’re missing out.) I remember the day I washed my face live on air during a Philosophy show and took all my makeup off on national TV (liberating!) and along the way, I’ve come to develop some true loves. I figured in honor of our special show, it would be fun to share my favs by way of the ’Shawn’s ‘Best of’ Awards’ list:
