The Joy of Being Parents

by on ‎02-14-2014 11:55 AM

When my daughter, Rumi Joon, was born in June 2006, my husband Ali and I didn’t think it was possible to love anyone as much as we loved her, or to be any happier than we were. Then, six years later in July 2012, we brought Indi Joon into the world. Since then our joy—and the work of being parents—has much more than doubled.

And no wonder. Not only do we have the pleasure of getting to know each of our daughters all over again every day, since they’re both growing and changing by the minute. We also have the great fun and joy of watching their relationship bloom. They’re precious together. Rumi reminds me of my self—a little mother. My brother is several years younger than I am, and when we were kids I doted on him the way Rumi adores Indi. At 19 months, Indi can’t quite say her big sister’s name, so she calls her “Mimi.” It’s the cutest thing—whenever Rumi’s not within eyesight, Indi sits on the floor calling her. “Mimi! Mimi!"

My “baby brother,” Nick, is 33 now, living in New York, definitely all grown up. But I still have the urge to mother him, and I think he still looks up to me as his big sis. I suspect Rumi and Indi will have a similar connection to guide both of them into their adult lives. And that makes me happier than I can say.
