St. Tropez & The Most Awkward Stage of My Life

by on ‎03-11-2013 02:35 PM

Full disclaimer: I plan to use a lot of sarcasm and dramatic interpretation in the story I'm about to tell you because that's how life is at 13. Please enjoy :-)

At the very beginning stages of life, and by that I mean functioning as a 5-6-7 year old person, You think you've got it all figured out. Your life was simple; there's an idealistic routine you become accustomed to and I admit ... I got comfortable.

The next stage of life is the first time you come into contact with the phrase "stuff hit the fan." Im talking about the revolution that is the between the ages of 11-13 which for a lot of us is comparable to the first circle of the underworld.  Hormones are kicked into high gear... In my case my hair went from a mild wave to 0-60 Roseanne Roseannadana, there was talking of training and undergarments (which of course I thought was silly because why would anyone want to wear "one of those things"... Ew), and all of the sudden people were coming to school with makeup on. I couldn't believe it. Makeup.

With all of that going on I decided the age of 13 was going to be my year, which naturally meant the universe decided it was going to be the most awkward year ever. I had started experimenting with cosmic style makeup and made an investment in a patent leather white pair of Doc Martin boots that even now, I don't think I could forgive myself for. None of that went entirely too well with the fairest of fair skin I was rocking.

Growing up in my moms hair salon, I was always privee to what was the newest on the market in terms of color cosmetics, hair styles, and body treatments. It was almost as if when the the sign went up in my moms salon that read "St. Tropez" it was the universe's way of giving me a break... Only I didn't fully pay attention.

I decided one fateful night to go into my momma's bathroom and "borrow" her St. Tropez. I decided I should only use it on my legs that way she wouldn't notice I has used it.  When I turned and looked into the mirror, I couldn't believe it!  My legs looked like they were out of a magazine! I had never seen such beautiful rich color before! It seemed too good to be true.

Here's where it got interesting... I thought I had outsmarted my mother... I thought, since I have this amazing tan, I'll just bring my shorts in my backpack and change into them like all the other girls do at school and that way everyone can see my new tan... And so I did.

It wasn't until lunch time that all of my girlfriends came over and asked me what I had used... They were in awe of the amazing color. It was the best five moments... I was now the most popular girl in my group.  It wasn't until I got separated in the lunch line that I would have the most humiliating experience ever.

My friend Alex Ramsey was in front of me picking our his vegetables when he turned around and gave me the once over. This is where I had the first "I still got it!" Wave of emotion. He then looked perplexed... Took a bite of his French Fry and asked the question I will remember for the rest if my life "Courtney, why are your legs a different color than your face?" I could feel what little color I had in my face leave my body... I didn't have an answer for him. We both just stood there and for a 13 year old boy who was probably figuring out at that age you should never ask a girl too many questions it was almost like he knew to change the subject. We paid for our lunch and went our separate ways.

I went immediately to the bathroom to see how bad it was and it was if the music from a scary movie had entered my mind. In the most dramatic thought process ever... It looked like my face and hands were about 73 shades lighter than my legs. I couldn't believe it didn't think about applying it to my face and hands! I couldn't run quickly enough to my backpack to change back into the jeans my momma sent me to school in.

When I got back to the table, my semi rebellious girlfriends were bummed that I had put my pristinely tanned legs away! They never even noticed the difference between my face and the color of my legs... Gotta give it to great girlfriends. We all cheer each other on during the trials and tribulations of beauty!

And that how this love affair started... And of course now, I remember to apply all over instead of one specific place :-).

Side note, When I first came to qvc I ran into Amy Stran and commented oh how great her skin looked and she said "oh thanks! It's my St. Tropez. It's the gift I give myself everyday." I knew right then and there, we were going to be instant friends :-)

Needless to say, I am extremely excited about our TSV that's coming up on Tuesday. I like many of you will be enjoying it on auto delivery.

For PM style, I will be rocking my St. Tropez as well as another beautiful frock from Isaac. Everything I wear by him these days I feel can be styled so many different ways... So I'm sticking with him this week. Who knows.. I may come in a little casual or I may take it to the nines... Either way, ill talk to you soon!

Have a great week!
