Ojon: Restore & Revitalize Collection, Plus Q&A with Gwynne Mims

I’ve been on a hair kick lately. Last week, we heard from Alberti from Alterna. Today, I’m going to tell you about my tress-transforming experience with Ojon, and their lead stylist, Gwynne Mims, is even going to weigh in with some expert info, tips, and more.

If you’re unfamiliar with the brand, you may be wondering what “Ojon” means. Well, Ojon is a type of palm tree found in the remote tropical rainforests of Central America. Its nuts contain precious oil that has the ability to help restore even the most damaged hair. In fact, it has been helping hair look healthier, lustrous, and full of body, bounce, and volume for over 500 years. And not only are Ojon products fortified with Ojon oil, but they’re also packed with other potent plant remedies. Combined, they create Ojon’s collection of powerful, restorative, and transformative hair treatments.

One of Ojon’s biggest crowd-pleasers is the Super-Size Restore & Revitalize Collection, which is designed for all hair types and ideal for very dry, damaged hair. It’s a 2012 Customer Choice Beauty Award winner, so I had to try it for myself.

Damage Reverse Restorative Shampoo and Conditioner are formulated with the highest concentration of Ojon oil. They both have the same pleasingly light, citrusy scent. The shampoo becomes a beautiful lather that I love massing into my locks. The conditioner is lusciously creamy and effortlessly glides through my hair. After completing the shampoo and conditioner ritual, I can already feel a difference in the texture of my hair. It feels sleeker, even while it’s still wet. Every time I shower, I can’t wait to blow dry my hair to see how it’s going to turn out.

The next step is Original Revitalizing Mist, a cult favorite, and/or Revitalizing Mousse, a newer formulation. They’re both lightweight, leave-in conditioners that prep hair for styling. The main differences I’ve found between them is the mist is especially great for helping smooth away tangles, and the mousse is amazing at enhancing volume. After I towel dry my hair, I evenly spritz Original Revitalizing Mist all over it. I comb it through, as directed, then, depending on the day, I usually do one of two things. I either blow dry my hair straight right away and add another spritz or two for extra sheen, or I add a couple pumps of Revitalizing Mousse and then blow dry my hair, curling it under with a big, round brush to really pump up the volume. Regardless of my styling approach, the result is soft, lush, shiny, healthier-looking, compliment-getting hair.

My newfound obsession with Ojon left me wanting to know more about the brand and their lead stylist/on-air guest, Gwynne Mims. So, I couldn’t resist asking her a few questions. Check out our fun interview (and her adorable headshots):

Ojon Lead Stylist Gwynne Mims

Missy: Did you always know you wanted to be a hairstylist?
Gwynne: I did, actually. However, I didn’t initially follow my instincts once I went into the career world. I had been cutting my friends’ (and dolls’) hair since I was pretty young. I decided to study Fine Art in college, though. After graduating and spending a year working in a museum, I decided to follow my dream and study hair and beauty. Since then, I haven’t looked back!

M: Do you do your own hair?
G: I style my own hair on a day-to-day basis, and our amazing stylist, Ena, styles my hair backstage before we go on air. As for my cuts and color, I’m a loyal client to my boss and mentor, Eva Scrivo, in New York City. It takes a village!

M: What’s your favorite part of your job?
G: The reason I went into beauty (and the reason I still love my job this much) is because I have the opportunity to help women feel amazing about themselves. Confidence is a powerful thing, and if I can teach and empower people to own and maximize their individual beauty, it can really make a difference. I’ve also always had a pretty creative mind, and using hair and beauty as a medium has been an exciting journey (not to mention, I get to come hang out with all of the amazing crew at the Q!).

M: Were you an Ojon customer before you partnered with them?
G: Yes! I’ve been an Ojon girl for years! Rub-Out Dry Shampoo, which never ran low in my personal stash or work kit, introduced me to the brand. From there, I became a loyal fan of Restorative Hair Treatment for my weekly conditioning treatments. When Ojon approached me to become their lead stylist, I was SO excited. I not only believe in the performance of their products, but also in their commitment to green practices. Not to mention, the team is amazing!

M: Are there any particular looks that can be achieved with the Restore & Revitalize Collection?
G: This collection is incredible because the products are so versatile. At the end of the day, every great style begins with healthy, happy hair. For a polished look, cleanse with Damage Reverse Shampoo and Conditioner, spritz in Revitalizing Mist before detangling, then add a couple more sprays before blow drying. You'll get a smooth, shiny finish on your hair. If you’re going for a high-volume style, Revitalizing Mousse will give you the hold and lift you need, but with a soft, satin finish.

Don’t go another day without discovering the ancient secret to beautiful hair!
