Friday's Topic on LRS: The Wrap Dress

The "Ladylike" trend is one of the largest fashion influences of the season. But when you look at what "ladylike" means, you realize that every era has its own interpretation. The 1950s and 60s were the epitome of ladylike, with dresses that were fit through the bodice, nipped in at the waist, and had figure-flattering outlines. This type of dress was almost the "uniform" for women for many years. Move on to the 1970s and there was nothing more iconic than the Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress. She created the first wrap dress in 1974 and, by 1976, sold over a million dresses and was featured on the cover of Newsweek. This dress allowed women to express the way they felt; it was feminine and flattering, but strong and polished at the same time. "It's more than a dress; it's a spirit." she told The Independent. "The wrap dress made women feel what they wanted to feel like...free and sexy." Her original wrap design is actually part of the "Impact" exhibit by the CFDA that's currently showing in New York. I had the pleasure of seeing the exhibit earlier this year. (Here's the video in case you missed it.)

Fast forward to today. We have a lot of choices on how we want to look ladylike. If you want to feel "held in," we have structured sheaths. If you want to indulge in a traditional wrap dress, you can find them in almost any store. If you want to go even more comfortable, there are options that feel as soft as a T-shirt. We are a generation that loves choices and this season, we have it. Don't think you can't find a "ladylike" that works for you? I guarantee it's out there.

This Friday, on The Lisa Robertson Show, we're doing a dress that's influenced by the wrap. It is a design I own and love and it won't fly open on a windy day. In other words, it's flattering but not risky. {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

Wrapped & Ready

We also have a few other ways you can look ladylike: a brow shaper from Jemma Kidd, a smocked dress from Cynthia Vincent, and some great wedges from Charles by Charles David.

See you at 10pm ET. There's no Friday Night Beauty this week because our 48-hour Summer Fashion Days event takes place Thursday and Friday.

Until then, tell me, what's your favorite way to "rock" a ladylike look this season?
