How Joe and I Spent Memorial Day Weekend 2014

by on ‎05-28-2014 02:34 PM

It's Memorial Day weekend. Seemed  kinda fitting to visit Annapolis. (Plus had gift certificate to historic hotel given to us for our wedding, burning hole in our pocket) Never been to home of the US Naval Academy.

Day #1: we arrive at Annapolis Harbor. Am jones-ing for major huge bowl of crab bisque...

Ok what are the chances. It's graduation day. Dress whites are everywhere. (So are the black jackets which we learn are graduates going into Marines. Did you know Marines first go to school at Naval Acad?) Joe is lamenting that he never served in military. This is the view from bowl of clam chowder. They didn't have crab bisque.

After lunch, double scoop at Storm Bros. Ice cream, and a boat cruise on the Miss Anne...

After boat cruisin, pooped. Head back to hotel. It's a charmer. The Governor Calvert House. Right across from the MD. State House and right next to our dinner rezzie - Harry Browne's (get the Salmon in leek & vanilla sauce. It's like, insane)

Day #2: On free town trolley shuttle, headed to tour of US Naval Academy. Had awesome breaky (that I'm still dreaming of) at 49 West Coffeehouse. Was like eating in ur living room. Guy plays chill guitar Samba music while we nibble on homemade quiche and berry muffins...

Seeing this gives you a gulp in your throat. 17k kids apply. 1200 get accepted. It's free to go here. You need a letter of recommendation from your state senator or congressman. It's a 4yr education with no summer break. Between may and August, you serve aboard a naval fleet. Just before you graduate, you decide whether you want to enter the Navy or Marines. Either way, you are required to give 5yrs of active duty service after you graduate. Amazing.

Closest joe and I will ever get to US naval academy prestige - buying the souvi tshirt...bought one for my dad too

Time for a little goofing off. I made Joe do this. Think he was slightly mortified at how excited I got.

...he totally refused to join me on this one

Ohh patriotic humor...

Dinner takes us to local haunt, Cantler's seafood. Prepare for a 2hr wait. We weren't brave enough to do the hammer/crab thing but had to snap this of how the locals do it... (Btw amaze crab bisque. Finally!)

Day #3: On our way home. Joe is intent on braving the Bay Bridge. Story in paper this weekend talked abt how people actually fear driving across it so I guess there is some shuttle you can take instead. Um, happy to report we survived. didn't think it was so scary. Just sad to leave the waterside. There's nothing like the life & times of coastal living! (Plus, living in a place where tourism folk in period Colonial costume stand in line next to you at Dunkin. Love it) The End!
