The Sweet Taste of Independence

The Fourth of July means so many things to everyone. To me, it reminds me of the many sacrifices our forefathers made to create this country of ours! And I thank them for all of the freedoms I am privileged to have to this day.

As you may know, Jeanne Bice loved all of our patriotic holidays. And when I had the chance to visit her, I remember she used to have apothecary jars around her kitchen full of candy for all of her guests. She never touched them—she really did not like chocolate, can you imagine???!!!!???? But I remember feeling so happy when I would dip my hands into those jars full of candy!

Now I see candy “bars” everywhere—at weddings, parties, on Pinterest, in magazines, etc. So taking Jeanne’s idea and those I found online, I have created my very own candy bar for the 4th of July!! I had also done this for Christmas and Easter, so why not continue the candy deliciousness for everyone to share at our July 4th barbecue!

FYI – I found it difficult to find blue candy and white candy in the major retail stores, so I had to order much of these online. Red candy is readily available!! There are a few websites I found where you can shop by color—which made my choices a lot easier (OrientalTrading.com, CandyWarehouse.com, GroovyCandies.com).

As for the vessels – the jars I used, well these you can find at any craft store - Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, etc. I have picked them up along the way and built my collection. I also use short square and round vases that I have gotten over the years. You really can use anything you can imagine – go ahead and give yourself permission to be creative!

Since I love to scrapbook, I also created labels for each jar using my scrapbooking supplies. But you could also download some images from Pinterest or create your own. You really don’t need them, the candy is self-explanatory, but I think it adds to the beauty of the candy bar! I used tape to secure the labels onto the jars or I used ribbon to attach the labels.

And for the finishing touches, I added some patriotic words, some red, white & blue star lights, and finished it off with patriotic garland (also found at a craft store). What do you think??

I also purchased some red, white & blue patriotic bags for our guests to take candy home—a gift for them and less candy hanging around my house!!

I hope you love this idea as much as my guests will! I would also like to wish you a very happy & safe FOURTH OF JULY!!

Until next time—Quack, Quack!
